Sandy's Travels: Philadelphia. Tips and photos I have garnered from my layovers in Philadelphia. This book is not an exhaustive travel guide for Philadelphia, but rather a personal journal of my travels. There are many reasons why I wrote this book, the most obvious being my love of travel. Travel really does make the world smaller and less scary. It is an investment that continuously enriches your life with experiences that will help you grow as a person. I hope to dedicate any proceeds made from this book toward my bucket list venture: starting a nonprofit that will increase awareness of Foster children. You can track my progress and/or become part of it all: www.sandyfll.comI hope this book has some value for you---travel info, tips on saving money and/or time, increasing your awareness of foster children or just a good chuckle :) www.sandyfll.com

The Caroline poet George Sandys had an exceptionally interesting early career as traveller and colonist; this study of his work following his return to England sheds new light on the expression of religious and political moderation prior to the Civil War. The poet George Sandys is one of the most interesting figures of the Renaissance period, his life and career encompassing a number of varied aspects. As a colonialist leader in Virginia he and his colleagues pursued a lenient policy towards the Indians which nearly cost the colony its existence. Returning to England, and settling at Great Tew along with other poets such as William Chillingworth and Lord Falkland, he won limited favour at the Caroline court; although he was loyal to the king, and adopted a richly Laudian style for his religious verse, he was implacably opposed to the divisive and confrontational policies of the Laudian church, and became an increasingly outspoken critic of absolutist government. His last work, a translation of a Latin religious play by Hugo Grotius, was the first in a series of literary attacks by moderate Royalists on Archbishop Laud. This book, the first recent examination of his life and work, sheds new light both on an unjustly neglected figure, and on the literature of religious and political moderation prior to the Civil War. JAMES ELLISON is Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde.

This book examines the letters, diaries, and published accounts of English and Scottish travelers to Greece in the seventeenth century, a time of growing interest in ancient texts and the Ottoman Empire. Through these early encounters, this book analyzes the travelers’ construction of Greece in the early modern Mediterranean world and shows how travel became a means of collecting and disseminating knowledge about ancient sites. Focusing on the mobility and exchange of people, artifacts, texts, and opinions between the two countries, it argues that the presence of Britons in Greece and of Greeks in England aroused interest not only in Hellenic antiquity, but also in Greece’s contemporary geopolitical role. Exploring myth, perception, and trope with clarity and precision, this book offers new insight into the connections between Greece, the Ottoman Empire, and the West.
