This report deals primarily with the analysis of the drinking-water and sanitation situation in the member countries of the Thematic Working Group on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (TWG WSH) based on statistics published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF) Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP) updated in 2015. This document also provides key information on selected health and development issues for TWG WSH member countries. The member countries covered in this report are: Brunei Darussalam Cambodia China Indonesia Japan the Lao People s Democratic Republic Malaysia Mongolia Myanmar the Philippines the Republic of Korea Singapore Thailand and Viet Nam. Previous documents prepared by WHO for the TWG WSH include extensive analyses of the drinking-water sanitation and hygiene sector as a whole based on country-level information. A key finding of this report is that the TWG WSH region has succeeded in meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target for drinking-water and sanitation which is to halve by 2015 the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking-water and basic sanitation (UN 2017). Individually nine TWG WSH countries achieved the MDG sanitation target but four countries (i.e. Cambodia Indonesia Mongolia and the Philippines) did not. All TWG WSH countries met the MDG drinking-water target except Mongolia which fell short of the target by 13 percentage points. Overall 77% of people in the TWG WSH region are using improved sanitation facilities whereas 94% are using improved drinking-water sources (UNICEF and WHO 2015). Despite an impressive effort made to provide drinking-water and sanitation infrastructure to the residents in this region about one quarter of the population still lacks access to improved sanitation and 7% lacks access to improved drinking-water. Water-related diseases including diarrhoeal diseases are significant causes of death among children under 5 years old in the region. Almost 30 000 people in the TWG WSH region especially children under 5 die each year due to water sanitation and hygiene related diseases (WHO 2014).

The issues surrounding water services are some of the most critical challenges facing not only the United States, but also the global community today. The Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine of the Institute of Medicine convened a workshop in October 2007, summarized in this volume, to address objectives related to Sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Services. One of the objectives of the workshop was to think about the interdependence of environmental health and human health as connected through water. Organizations cannot discuss water without considering the interrelationship of sanitation and hygiene. It is the convergence of these strategies that promotes healthy outcomes for both individuals and the environment. A second objective of the workshop was to consider how planning, management, and interdisciplinary approaches-including technology, social behavioral issues, gender, health, environment, economic, and political aspects-can be integrated to arrive at sustainable solutions. Many organizations and agencies are trying to forge a path toward sustainable practices in water, but the various sectors utilizing and governing water services are not interconnected. More integration and a greater understanding of holistic approaches are needed.

Prospects For Schistosomiasis Elimination written by Robert Bergquist and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-03 with Medical categories.

Current efforts to limit the ravages of schistosomiasis are pushing the world closer to eliminating a chronic infection that has been associated with human life in the tropics since time immemorial. This notwithstanding, the disease remains a scourge for large populations in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, and the main part of this book is made up by papers dealing with its current distribution, discussing ways and means to establish and implement improved control approaches. While chemotherapy limits the symptoms caused by schistosomiasis, the number of infected people will not decrease until the parasite's life cycle is interrupted. To that end, some papers focus on the intermediate snail host, which is notoriously difficult to control, while others discuss human hygiene and sanitation. The latter approach not only prevents infection through avoiding people being infected from the snail, but more importantly, also stops people infecting the snail by leaving contagious feces and urine in nature. With morbidity reduced by chemotherapy, the immediate target now is the interruption of transmission to be achieved by new tools, such as the novel chemotherapies, improved diagnostics (for humans, animals, and snails), and vaccines discussed in several of the papers. As made clear in this book, a complex infection requires new tools as well as work on many fronts, above all; however, a clear idea is needed as to how to skillfully combine the tools available and sustain implemented control activities.

""What works to effectively extend and sustain water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) service provision?" This question becomes increasingly difficult to answer in a rapidly changing global environment. Informed decision-making is impeded by limited or no information on WASH-related national policies, institutional frameworks, domestic investments, human resources and targeting of external assistance. The 2012 report of the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water contributes to filling this information gap by summarizing the efforts and approaches of 74 low- and middle-income countries and 24 external support agencies. Through text, graphics, maps and full country annexes, the report illustrates the status of key WASH efforts and highlights global trends. Against the backdrop of remarkable global gains in extending drinking-water and sanitation services, this report: builds the case for a significant risk of slippage on the gains made in extending WASH services unless more attention is given to maintaining those services and assets; acknowledges that despite the severe financial crisis faced by many high-income countries, aid for sanitation and drinking water continues to rise, while targeting to basic Millennium Development Goal-type services is improving; shows that some countries are reporting good progress towards national WASH targets and argues that, for the majority of countries, human and financial resource constraints, especially for sanitation, are significantly impeding progress. This report will be a key resource for all stakeholders concerned with improving WASH service provision around the world."--Page 4 of cover.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) explicitly state clean water and sanitation as the sixth of the 17 goals to be achieved by 2030. One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) targets of halving by 2015 the proportion or percentage of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation has not yet been fulfilled. Clean water on the tap is still a luxury in Africa. Water exists in abundance in Africa but not in ways it can be accessed and used readily by ordinary people. Discovering solutions to the provision of access to clean and safe water in Africa remain still a big challenge. The SDGs have to be implemented fully and efficiently to make sure all people including rural households have access to clean and safe water and sanitation. Water is more critical than electricity and other necessities in life. One can find a way to live without electricity, but life without water is inconceivable. The priority to get water clean and accessible to

As the human population grows-tripling in the past century while, simultaneously, quadrupling its demand for water-Earth's finite freshwater supplies are increasingly strained, and also increasingly contaminated by domestic, agricultural, and industrial wastes. Today, approximately one-third of the world's population lives in areas with scarce water resources. Nearly one billion people currently lack access to an adequate water supply, and more than twice as many lack access to basic sanitation services. It is projected that by 2025 water scarcity will affect nearly two-thirds of all people on the planet. Recognizing that water availability, water quality, and sanitation are fundamental issues underlying infectious disease emergence and spread, the Institute of Medicine held a two-day public workshop, summarized in this volume. Through invited presentations and discussions, participants explored global and local connections between water, sanitation, and health; the spectrum of water-related disease transmission processes as they inform intervention design; lessons learned from water-related disease outbreaks; vulnerabilities in water and sanitation infrastructure in both industrialized and developing countries; and opportunities to improve water and sanitation infrastructure so as to reduce the risk of water-related infectious disease.

Ensuring Safe Water And Sanitation For All written by United Nations Publications and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023 with Political Science categories.

"Access to safe water and adequate sanitation is a basic human right. While progress has been made towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal on water and sanitation (SDG 6), the trends and current status of access to water and sanitation provide cause for concern. There is an urgent need to devise solutions that accelerate progress and ensure that no one is left behind. Nearly every other Sustainable Development Goal relies in some way on the achievement of SDG 6. Together with good hygiene practices, for instance, it is essential for the achievement of good health and well-being (SDG 3) and gender equality (SDG 5) as well eliminating poverty (SDG 1) and reducing inequalities (SDG 10). As a determinant of success in areas including agriculture, energy, and disaster resilience, it has vast and consistently underestimated socio-economic impacts. Whilst factors including better policies and governance, increased funding, improved infrastructure, and increased data availability for better decision-making are central to resolving water and sanitation issues, there is no doubt that Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) can play a particularly significant role. Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the vital role of STI in delivering solutions to critical challenges. Countries are now more attentive to the development and deployment of new technologies and processes. New applications of existing technology and techniques have great potential to increase the efficiency of existing water and sanitation systems and to secure water and sanitation for all. STI for water has thus played a central role in discussion at recent international water policy events. It will be a key focus in the upcoming 2023 UN Water Conference and the 2022 International Water Association Congress in Copenhagen. This paper explores the role of STI as key enablers of catalytic actions toward achieving universal access to safe water and sanitation. The second chapter will discuss the progress in implementing SDG 6 and challenges in meeting its targets. The third chapter will provide an analytical framework for and examples of practical STI solutions which address issues in providing water and sanitation services. Chapter four highlights the global effort to build partnerships and cooperation in achieving SDG 6. Finally, chapter five will propose recommendations to be considered by policymakers and the international community."--
