On Christmas Eve, one of Santa's reindeer informs him that all of his reindeer have come down with the flu and will be unable to pull his sleigh that night. Santa panics and wonders how he will be able to deliver all the toys to the children this Christmas. While searching for answers, he stumbles upon a little white chicken who informs him that he has the solution. He tells Santa that he has just spoken to Prancer, the lead reindeer, and Prancer reveals to the chicken that the jingle bells that the reindeer wear when they pull the sleigh provide the magic that allows the reindeer team to fly. The chicken takes the bells to Santa and tries to convince Santa that the bells will work for him. Santa is not convinced until the chicken puts the bells on himself, and in a blink of an eye, the chicken grows to be ten feet tall. Santa then mounts the chicken and with his sack full of toys, completes his mission that night. The story is told in rhyme and is brilliantly illustrated by the author's grandson, Louis W. Lonsway.

One Christmas many years ago, Louiss stepson gave him a Christmas tree ornament, a wood carved Santa sitting astride a chicken. He couldnt help wonder what the story was behind such a ridiculous ornament. He tried to find some clue as to its origin but found nothing. So to satisfy his own curiosity, he wrote this poem to give the Santa life. He would read it to his grandchildren every Christmas until they grew up. Now since his oldest grandson, Louis Lonsway, has grown into a talented illustrator, he suggested to him that he illustrate the story and that together, they would try to produce a new Christmas legend.

He is an "Arion," from the "ancient times," who can achieve immortality by performing magical acts of daring and courage-when called upon. As the story unfolds in the months before Christmas, Charlie, Louis and Chug Martin are thrown into circumstances wrought: with danger, daring, and intrigue. They must: foil the plot of a trio of horse-thieves from Saint Louis, who arrive in Centerville-during the annual county fair-to steal Jupiter, the great racehorse, who has come to run in Centerville's famous "Gazette Stakes." Charlie, Louis and Chug perform: heroic deeds, ultimately acts of great courage, bravery and determination; in ridding the town of the three Missouri Rats- Black Jack Tilly, Cool Joe Biggs and Rags Martin. This wonderful Christmas fable is about: tried-and-true-values and good-morals that all children; should take to heart.
