In the first place, there is a natural desire on the part of the public to learn something of the career 0/ every artist who visits this country. That desire is intensified when the artist is so illustrious as Sarah Bernhardt. Her name, at least, is familiar to the play-goers of Australia, although she has not yet acted here. But her achievements are not so well-known. She is the heroine of a thousand and one anecdotes, some of them questionable, few of them true. It is no secret that, at one time, in order to jamiliarise herself with the idea of death, she adopted the gruesome plan of sleeping in a coflin. As to her stage-life, however, but scant inform ation has, as yet, been published. The biographical dictionaries contain but superficial accounts of the greatest French actress since the days of the divine Rachel. If you have spoken kindly of me, my compliance with your request may lead some people to suppose that you were prompted by a wish to please me when you wrote your book. And, on the other hand, if you have been ill-natured, your action may appear perfidious. You ask me to supply you with some information about myself and my childhood. Innumerable stories have been printed about both, and most are false. In my memoirs, which I mean to publish two years hence, I shall correct these untruths. But as your book is to be issued in America, you may express my feelings with regard to this amazing and most admirable nation. I am making my fourth tour in America. The extraordinary progress of this public has astounded me. When I came here first, some sixteen years ago, I made my debut as Adrienne. At the end of a few minutes I was disconcerted and alarmed by a strange noise. Five minutes later the same noise disturbed me. It sounded like the dull and muffled hissing of a multitude. I heard the sound a third time, and at last I understood what had been troubling me. The ladies in the house had all come armed with copies of the play, and as they turned the leaves they made the rustling sound which seemed so terrible. On the occasion of my second visit to this country, some ten years ago, about half the women in my audiences managed to dispense with books. When for the third time I appeared here, at most ten or fifteen of them had brought copies of the play with them; and this year not one woman - not a single one - had any need of books.
