Disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, floods, heat waves, nuclear accidents, and large scale pollution incidents take lives and cause exceptionally large health problems. The majority of large-scale disasters affect the most vulnerable populations, which are often comprised of people of extreme ages, in remote living areas, with endemic poverty, and with low literacy. Health-related emergency disaster risk management (Health-EDRM) [1] refers to the systematic analysis and management of health risks surrounding emergencies and disasters; it plays an important role in reducing hazards and vulnerability along with extending preparedness, response, and recovery measures. This concept encompasses risk analyses and interventions, such as accessible early warning systems, timely deployment of relief workers, and the provision of suitable drugs and medical equipment, to decrease the impact of disaster on people before, during, and after disaster events. Disaster risk profiling and interventions can be at the personal/household, community, and system/political levels; they can be targeted at specific health risks including respiratory issues caused by indoor burning, re-emergence of infectious disease due to low vaccination coverage, and gastrointestinal problems resulting from unregulated waste management. Unfortunately, there has been a major gap in the scientific literature regarding Health-EDRM. The aim of this Special Issue of IJERPH was to present papers describing/reporting the latest disaster and health risk analyses, as well as interventions for health-related disaster risk management, in an effort to address this gap and facilitate major global policies and initiatives for disaster risk reduction.

This is the first comprehensive text to provide not only a detailed explanation of how the SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) virus is spread within human populations, but also an epidemiological analysis and interpretation of viral pandemics to enable better measures for prevention and control. Providing an introduction to the physiology of both the human immune system and the SARS-CoV2 virus, specifically the virus’s replicative potential and our own vulnerability, the book offers an in-depth understanding of how the pandemic evolved. It also highlights the aberrant epigenomic mechanistic process in pathogenic microbe’s replication and survival, implying gene and environment interaction that affected different populations. Citing a range of environmental conditions, from structural and systemic racism to malnutrition and low-socioeconomic status, the book examines how these factors exacerbated existing health disparities, resulting in a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality on certain social groups. Also providing invaluable guidance on how future iterations of this pandemic may be better prevented and controlled, this will be a defining book for students, researchers and professionals within Public Health and Clinical Medicine to better understand the SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) virus, and how to protect the most vulnerable social groups.

This book provides an overview of the science and technology that helps us understand the trajectory, i.e., genomics, epidemiology, and health care of the COVID-19 pandemic, its virus, and pathogenicity. Topics that are covered include how the virus is impacting our health care system and the economy. Simulation modeling used to predict the spread of the virus and risk of infection in America and globally is included, as well as the critical role of communication in pandemic response. An important focus is synthetic biology, notably employed in the development and production of effective diagnostics that can be rapidly deployed and development of vaccines in unlimited quantity. US and global production of vaccine is discussed. Most importantly, treatment of patients infected with the virus that includes telemedicine and virtual reality for remote intensive care settings is a significant aspect of the discussion. Biotechnology plays a major role in responding to the COVID-19pandemic and advances utilized in the engineering sciences are introduced.

It demonstrates that a moral vision is necessary to articulate this experience of connectedness. Subsequently, a perspective of global bioethics is introduced, which provides a broader framework than mainstream bioethics, since it highlights the significance of both vulnerability and solidarity. Through a unique global perspective the book addresses the moral challenges of the pandemic, and places the confrontation with death, disease and disability within a wider framework of ethical concerns. Prior health studies have explored the relationship between employee health and employee performance, e.g., productivity, innovation, etc., at the workplace. A few studies also show that at the country level, health and healthcare expenditure are positively associated with economic performance. However, the studies that investigate the associations between health and corporate/urban outcomes (in term of sustainability practices, economic value, growth, resilience, etc.) remain scant. Employee health & safety is a key item in corporate sustainability practices. Companies that are exposed to the risk of health & safety accidents could suffer production disruption, liabilities, lawsuits, etc.; employee health also influences corporate culture, employee satisfaction, productivity, innovation, financial performance and its long-term value. Health can also influence urban vitality and economic growth. Cities with good public health could also be more resilient to pandemic, such as COVID-19. Sustainability becomes the key theme in corporate and urban developments. Further studies are needed to explore the roles of health in firms and cities, real impacts and values.
