Martina Napolitano explores the poetics of one of the most significant Russian authors of the 20th century. Sasha Sokolov’s oeuvre represents a milestone in the development of Russian literature; his legacy can be traced in most prose and poetry appearing in post-Soviet Russia. Taking as point of departure the studies and analyses written so far and considering the new suggestions contained in Sokolov’s last published book Triptych (2011), Napolitano further examines the keystones and the theoretical framework that arise from a close reading of Sokolov’s works, trying to systematize the findings into what can be considered as a structured authorial theory of literary creation. The study demonstrates how Sokolov’s oeuvre cannot be fully understood but within the widened perspective of inter-artistic creation: in fact, the writer, a “failed composer”, as he admits, in his literary work has tried to draw natural and spontaneous connecting lines between the artificially categorized realms of art (word, sound, painting, performance). Finally, the book sets forth the first solid analysis of Sokolov’s concept of proeziia, not merely a genre nor style of his own invention, but a more significant theoretical reflection of the writer about the role and value of literature, art, creation, and finally beauty.

In recent years, the Russian government has dramatically expanded its restrictions on the internet, while simultaneously consolidating its grip on traditional media. The internet, however, because of its transnational configuration, continues to evade comprehensive state control and offers ever new opportunities for disseminating and consuming dissenting opinions. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, including media law, human rights, political science, media and cultural studies, and the study of religion, this book examines the current state of the freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and media freedom in Russia, focusing on digital media and cross-media initiatives that bridge traditional and new media spheres. It assesses how the conditions for free speech are influenced by the dynamic development of Russian media, including the expansion of digital technologies, explores the interaction and transfer of practices, formats, stylistics and aesthetics between independent and state-owned media, and discusses how far traditional media co-opt strategies developed by and associated with independent media to mask their lack of free expression. Overall, the book provides a deep and rich understanding of the changing structures and practices of national and transnational Russian media and how they condition the boundaries of freedom of expression in Russia today.

Die Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur hat Hochkonjunktur. Was aber ist unter dem Begriff eigentlich zu verstehen? Wo ist seine Verwendung sinnvoll, wo stößt sie an Grenzen? Bislang wurde der Terminus weitgehend unreflektiert benutzt, Versuche einer Konzeptualisierung haben in Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft kaum stattgefunden. Insofern beschreitet der vorliegende Band neue Wege. Die Beiträge lassen anhand unterschiedlicher methodischer Näherungen und auf der Grundlage exemplarischen Textmaterials ein umfassendes Bild von der Reichweite und den Grenzen des Begriffs Holocaustliteratur als eines literaturwissenschaftlichen Konzepts entstehen. Dabei wird hinterfragt, wo Funktionalität und Sinnhaftigkeit einer solchen Begrifflichkeit, insbesondere mit Blick auf immer neue und in der zeitgenössischen Literatur vielfältiger werdende Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Genozid, zu verorten sind. Die Beiträge bringen eine wichtige Erkenntnis klar zum Vorschein: Die literaturwissenschaftliche Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur kommt ohne präzise Definition ihres Untersuchungsgegenstandes nicht aus, doch impliziert eine solche Definition keineswegs, dass es sich dabei um ein starres System handelt. Vielmehr erweist sich die Holocaustliteratur als ein in all seinen strukturellen wie funktionalen Facetten veränderliches Phänomen der Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte, das aufgrund seiner thematischen Breite und der Vielfalt ästhetischer Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten zu immer neuen Lektüren und Relektüren einlädt.

Als „geistige Nahrung“ beschrieb die Literaturkritikerin Raissa Orlova die Bedeutung der westlichen Literatur für die sowjetische Bevölkerung, die während des ganzen Bestehens der Sowjetunion nicht an Popularität verlor. Es wurden jedoch nicht alle bekannten Werke deutscher Literatur auch in der UdSSR publiziert. Was westdeutsche Autorinnen und Autoren betraf, war Heinrich Böll ab Beginn der Tauwetterperiode bis zu Beginn der 70er-Jahre in der Sowjetunion der meistübersetzte und beliebteste Autor der deutschen Nachkriegsliteratur. Danach brach die Publikation seiner Werke abrupt ab und Böll wurde bis zu seinem Tod in der offiziellen Literaturkritik kaum noch erwähnt. Hingegen wurde dem in der Bundesrepublik nicht minder bekannten Günter Grass während des gesamten Zeitraums von 1953 bis 1985, der hier betrachtet wurde, kaum positive Beachtung geschenkt. Astrid Shchekina-Greipel untersucht in ihrem vorliegenden Buch anhand der beiden Nobelpreisträger Grass und Böll, welche Faktoren es genau waren, die unter den ideologisch-totalitären Bedingungen der Sowjetunion die Publikation westlicher Literatur möglich machten oder verhinderten. Die Untersuchungsebenen der Studie ergeben sich aus der Kulturtransfertheorie: Der Rezeptionskontext und die Trägergruppen wurden mit Hilfe des literarischen Feldes nach Bourdieu betrachtet, anhand des Diskurses über ausgewählte Werke wurden die Rezeptionsmechanismen nachgezeichnet. Ferner analysiert Shchekina-Greipel zwei Übersetzungen und arbeitet dabei heraus, wie dabei die Texte verändert und ideologisch angepasst wurden, und zeichnet den Austausch zwischen DDR und Sowjetunion in Bezug auf westdeutsche Literatur nach. In digitaler Form wird eine detaillierte Bibliographie aller im Untersuchungszeitraum publizierten westdeutschen Werke bereitgestellt, die eine gezielte Recherche zu konkreten Publikationen auf dem Gebiet der RSFSR ermöglicht und so auch als Grundlage für weitere Forschungen in diesem Bereich dienen kann. Die Bibliographie steht auch zum Download bereit. Die Autorin: Astrid Maria Ottilie Shchekina-Greipel studierte an der MGU Moskau, der RGGU Moskau und der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, an welcher sie im Internationalen Graduiertenkolleg "Kulturtransfer und kulturelle Identität" im Fachbereich Slavistik promovierte.

How Russian Literature Became Great explores the cultural and political role of a modern national literature, orchestrated in a Slavonic key but resonating far beyond Russia's borders. Rolf Hellebust investigates a range of literary tendencies, philosophies, and theories from antiquity to the present: Roman jurisprudence to German Romanticism, French Enlightenment to Czech Structuralism, Herder to Hobsbawm, Samuel Johnson to Sainte-Beuve, and so on. Besides the usual Russian suspects from Pushkin to Chekhov, Hellebust includes European writers: Byron and Shelley, Goethe and Schiller, Chateaubriand and Baudelaire, Dante, Mickiewicz, and more. As elsewhere, writing in Russia advertises itself via a canon of literary monuments constituting an atemporal "ideal order among themselves" (T.S. Eliot). And yet this is a tradition that could only have been born at a specific moment in the golden nineteenth-century age of historiography and nation-building. The Russian example reveals the contradictions between immutability and innovation, universality and specificity at the heart of modern conceptions of tradition from Sainte-Beuve through Eliot and down to the present day.
