R. S. Thomas is recognised globally as one of the major poets of the twentieth century. Such detailed attention as has been paid to the religious dimensions of his work has, however, largely limited itself to such matters as his obsession with the ‘absent God’, his appalled fascination with the mixed cruelty and wonder of a divinely created world, his interest in the world-view of the ‘new physics’, and his increasingly heterodox stance on spiritual matters. What has been largely neglected is his central indebtedness to key features of the ‘classic’ Christian tradition. This book concentrates on one powerful and compelling example of this, reading Thomas’s great body of religious work in the light of the three days that form the centre of the Gospel narrative; the days which tell of the death, entombment and resurrection of Christ.

Just after Independence Day in July 1953 Violet Sullivan, a local good time girl living in Serena Station Southern California, drives off in her brand new Chevy and is never seen again. Left behind is her young daughter, Daisy, and Violet's impetuous husband, Foley, who had been persuaded to buy his errant wife the car only days before . . . Now, thirty-five years later, Daisy wants closure. Reluctant to open such an old cold case Kinsey Millhone agrees to spend five days investigating, believing at first that Violet simply moved on to pastures new. But very soon it becomes clear that a lot of people shared a past with Violet, a past that some are still desperate to keep hidden. And in a town as close-knit as Serena there aren't many places to hide when things turn vicious . . .

Author Rebecca Waites grew up in a violent home in the midst of a violent society. Belfast in the 1970s was a rough place, and it changed the way she saw the world forever. Silent No More offers an authentic account of the life of a working-class Belfast woman, following Waites from her earliest beginnings through middle age and on to her years as a grandmother. She shares how and why she survived the turmoil that marred her early life, dealing her abusive father and living through the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Her marriage to a sadistic, manipulative man brought further problems for her and her children, having lasting effects on their relationships. She began writing for her children, now adults, to help them understand what her history had been like from her perspective, and now she hopes her story may help others in similar circumstances who feel helpless and alone. The memoir presents the life story of a woman who lived through a violent and turbulent time in the midst of an abusive upbringing and yet found peace and triumph in her own way.
