Excerpt from Saturn and Its System I have endeavoured in this work to give a complete account of the phenomena presented by the planet Saturn and its system. It might appear, at first sight, that a single planet, however interesting or elaborate the scheme of which it is the centre, should rather be made the subject of a chapter than of a volume, even of the moderate dimensions of the present. It will be found, however, that much that is contained in these pages, is applicable, with suitable changes in matters of detail, to all the members of the solar system. The inquiry into the nature of the rings, in Chapter V., deals with a subject not uninteresting, I think, on its own account, but which gathers an additional interest from its bearing on the speculations of Laplace. It is not altogether impossible that in the variations perceptibly proceeding in the Saturnian ring-system a key may one day be found to the law of development under which the solar system has reached its present condition. Certain points of resemblance between the relations of Saturn and our earth, as respects the variations of their seasons, have induced me to devote somewhat more space to the consideration of the celestial phenomena presented to the Saturnians than the nature of the subject might appear to warrant. Excerpt from On the Stability of the Motion of Saturn's Rings There are some questions in Astronomy, to which we are attracted rather on account of their peculiarity, as the possible illustration of some unknown principle, than from any direct advantage which their solution would afford to mankind. The theory of the Moons inequalities, though in its first stages it presents theorems interesting to all students of mechanics, has been pursued into such intricacies of calculation as can be followed up only by those who make the improvement of the Lunar Tables the object of their lives. The value of the labours of these men is recognised by all who are aware of the importance of such tables in Practical Astronomy and Navigation. The methods by which the results are obtained are admitted to be sound, and we leave to professional astronomers the labour and the merit of developing them. The questions which are suggested by the appearance of Saturn's Rings cannot, in the present state of Astronomy, call forth so great an amount of labour among mathematicians. I am not aware that any practical use has been made of Saturn's Rings, either in Astronomy or in Navigation. They are too distant, and too insignificant in mass, to produce any appreciable effect on the motion of other parts of the Solar system; and for this very reason it is difficult to determine those elements of their motion which we obtain so accurately in the case of bodies of greater mechanical importance. But when we contemplate the Rings from a purely scientific point of view, they become the most remarkable bodies in the heavens, except, perhaps, those still less useful bodies - the spiral nebulae. When we have actually seen that great arch swung over the equator of the planet without any visible connexion, we cannot bring our minds to rest. We cannot simply admit that such is the case, and describe it as one of the observed facts in nature, not admitting or requiring explanation. We must either explain its motion on the principles of mechanics, or admit that, in the Saturnian realms, there can be motion regulated by laws which we are unable to explain. Excerpt from The Sun: Ruler, Fire, Light, and Life of the Planetary System When I had completed my treatise on Saturn and its System, I formed the design of preparing a separate treatise on each of the planets Mars and Jupiter, and then another and larger treatise on the Sun. Circum stances, which it is needless to particularise, prevented me from carrying out this design at that time, and indeed threatened to withdraw my attention altogether from scientific pursuits. That my plans, though delayed, have not been lost sight of during the last four years, is evidenced by the appearance of many papers of mine on Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun, in several quarterly, monthly, and weekly journals. These, if collected, would of themselves suffice to form volumes of no inconsiderable dimensions on these several orbs; while my Other Worlds than Ours presents a sort of summary of my researches on these and other astronomical subjects. But it is only quite recently that I have been able to resume my original design. The delay has not been without its advantages, however. A work on the Sun has at the present time a far greater interest than it would have had four years since while I have been able to obtain a much wider and more complete view of the subject than I should probably have thought necessary had I completed the work at that time.
