Obra clásica, casi legendaria, en el campo de los estudios humanísticos, Saturno y la melancolía representa el fruto de casi cincuenta años de trabajo de tres figuras capitales de nuestro siglo para la historiografía de las artes visuales, Raymond Klibansky, Erwin Panofsky y Fritz Saxl, continuadores de la obra iniciada por Aby Warburg. Sus orígenes se remontan a 1923 con la publicación de un estudio de Panofsky y Fritz Saxl sobre el grabado «Melancolia I» de Durero. Agotada la obra, se decidió preparar una nueva edición, revisada y ampliada, en la que se describiría detalladamente el desarrollo de la doctrina de los temperamentos y se haría la historia de «Saturno, Señor de la Melancolía», hasta los umbrales de la época moderna. Con el tiempo, la extensión del objeto de la investigación obligó a abandonar el esquema de la monografía sobre el mencionado grabado, y con la incorporación de Klibansky surgió el proyecto de un libro nuevo. Este modélico estudio resulta hoy de imprescindible lectura para los interesados en disciplinas tan variadas como la filosofía, la literatura, la medicina, la astrología o, naturalmente, el arte. Dividido en cuatro partes, la primera trata de la noción de melancolía y su evolución histórica durante la Antigüedad y la Edad Media, mientras que la segunda se centra en el estudio de Saturno, astro de la melancolía, en el contexto tanto de la tradición literaria como de la tradición pictórica antigua y medieval; la tercera estudia la «melancolía poética» en la poesía postmedieval así como la glorificación de la melancolía y de Saturno en el neoplatonismo florentino y el origen de la ideal moderna de genio. Finalmente, la cuarta parte está dedicada al grabado «Melancolia I» de Durero, obra singular que ha dado origen a un gran número de complejas interpretaciones de carácter astrológico, psicoanalítico, sociológico, teológico o filosófico.

Es probable que fuera en 1779 cuando Goya, que contaba entonces treinta y tres años, entró en contacto con la naciente tendencia prerromántica en la literatura española. La atmósfera melancólica, patente en poemas como Noches Lúgubres de Cadalso, en A Clori de Jovellanos y en La Noche y la Soledad de Meléndez Valdés, se refleja también en La Cita de Goya de finales de ese mismo año. Pero también revela en ella su extenso conocimiento de la antigua pintura española y de la tradición, recogida en obras como el trabajo típico de la Iconologia de Ripa. Conocimiento que el artista utilizó en otros cartones de esta época y en los pintados en 1786-87 representando las cuatro estaciones. En la escena de El invierno nos ofrece un cuadro monumental de un paisaje cargado de fatalidad, que oprime a los seres humanos. En El albañil herido y Los pobres en la fuente rinde homenaje a la gente pobre, al rey Carlos III y a su humanitario decreto favoreciendo a la clase trabajadora. Goya, Saturno y melancolía, de Folke Nordström, es un libro que ha ejercido influencia decisiva sobre los estudios dedicados a Goya y que inexplicablemente no había sido traducido hasta ahora al castellano. El lector quizá se sorprenda al encontrar en esta obra muchas de las ideas que se han convertido hoy en tesis aceptadas y bien conocidas sobre la pintura del aragonés. El profesor Folke Nordström ha abordado la pintura de Goya en una perspectiva metodológica que es posible calificar de iconologista, aunque sin la deformación a que el academicismo condujo en muchas ocasiones a esta metodología. Destaca su atención a las imágenes concretas del pintor, sus cuidadosos análisis de fuentes literarias e iconográficas, la complejidad y claridad de su estudio, que nunca pierde de vista la unidad y el cambio de una trayectoria artística que se extiende desde los cartones para tapiz hasta las Pinturas negras.

The aim of the author of this book is to bring home not only to researchers, but to every kind of audience the repercussions of a literary topic that was an essential part of Classical education and, even more, a crucial subject in and outside the academic world. In ancient Greece and Rome, the Cycle of Troy was viewed as an essential compilation of information and educational models which was a vivid testimony throughout the history of Greek and Roman influence. Yet in the middle Ages, Trojan myths, just as with those concerning other characters like Hercules or Jason, were transformed into models of human behaviour, i.e. underwent the process of “moralization”. We say “Moralitee” to point out how Geoffrey Chaucer recreates those myths. Although we will extensively discuss how Chaucer recreates the Trojan myths in his works, we can anticipate what the reader will find. Chaucer manipulates his material from a multifold point of view: first of all, Chaucer was a man of his times, an unquiet mind and personality who always plays different games with that material. We might consider heroic the fact that Chaucer would pour out on his work the great background that the European writers (mainly Boccaccio, Dante, and Petrarch) supplied him (we will remember how difficult collecting information was in a period of vast lack of what we might call “media”). Come what may, he projects his wisdom to stress the most surmounting aspects of the formal characterization of the myths, and integrates them into the proper contexts of his works, as one of the key forces that the audience is expected to revive with the knowledge that it is supposed to own.
