In The Vices of Learning: Morality and Knowledge at Early Modern Universities, Sari Kivistö examines scholarly vices in the late Baroque and early Enlightenment periods. Moral criticism of the learned was a favourite theme of Latin dissertations, treatises and satires written in Germany ca. 1670–1730. Works on scholarly pride, logomachy, curiosity and other vices kept the presses running at German Protestant universities as well as farther north. Kivistö shows how scholars constructed fame and how the process involved various means of producing celebrity. The book industry, plagiarism and impressive titles were all labelled dishonest means of advancing a career. In The Vices of Learning Kivistö argues that scholarly ethics was an essential part of the early modern intellectual framework.

Brochures play a significant role in governmental public information provision. Every year many brochures are distributed to inform, instruct or persuade people. These brochures may benefit from a systematic design process, including applied research such as pretesting. Among communication professionals, the importance of pretesting is practically undisputed. Readers from the target audience are assumed to provide valuable insights into whether a document really works. Organizations therefore increasingly try to include a pretest in the design process of important documents. Various pretest methods have been developed and are being used in practice. However, little is known yet about the merits and restrictions of the available approaches. This book provides a framework for scholarly research into pretesting, and presents a series of studies into the validity of one particular pretest instrument: a combination of the plus-minus method and a semi-structured questionnaire. This is one of the prevailing pretest approaches in the Dutch public information sector. The validity of the pretest instrument is assessed in two complementary ways. First, the question is addressed as to whether a revision on the basis of pretest results actually leads to an improvement in the functional quality of brochures. Second, a study is presented in which text and subject-matter experts judge the importance of pretest results. The pretest instrument appears to yield a large amount and a great variety of reader feedback, which in a subsequent revision may contribute to significant improvements in the effectiveness of brochures.

In this volume researchers from American and European universities and institutes present their recent research on 'Functional Communication Quality'. Functional refers to the purposes of the communication process. The relations between these purposes and the best way to describe them, are some of the topics discussed. Was muß alles berücksichtigt werden, um dem Phänomen 'Satzverknüpfung im Text', v.a. adverbialen Gefügen, gerecht zu werden? In dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, daß sich Besonderheiten der Struktur von Teilsätzen und Satzgefügen (z.B. Position der Teilsätze, auffällige Intonation/Interpunktion oder 'Hauptsatzstellung' im Nebensatz) auf den Handlungscharakter von Texten beziehen lassen. Unter syntaktischem Aspekt wird für Subordination ein Modell vorgestellt, das sich auf die Prototypentheorie bezieht und es ermöglicht, auch untypische Nebensätze in die Diskussion einzubeziehen, d.h. solche, deren Satzgliedwert, Wortstellung, Einordnung ins Gefüge oder Informationswert nicht dem Normalfall entsprechen. Unter textpragmatischem Aspekt wird gefragt, welche Rolle Satzgefüge im Text spielen, wenn der Handlungscharakter, d.h. die Illokutions- und Informationsstruktur von Texten berücksichtigt wird. Auf dieser Basis läßt sich eine formal und pragmatisch auffällige Gruppe von Satzgefügen resp. Nebensätzen ('handlungskommentierende Anmerkungen') exemplarisch genauer beschreiben. Die zahlreichen Beispiele, die der Untersuchung zugrundeliegen, sind nicht konstruiert, sondern stammen aus aktuellen journalistischen Texten der letzten Jahre. Damit soll ein wichtiges Ergebnis der vorliegenden Arbeit unterstrichen werden: Um alle wesentlichen Aspekte von Satzverknüpfung zu untersuchen, muß über den Rahmen der Syntax hinaus auch die pragmatische Struktur von Texten in die Diskussion einbezogen werden. Nur so läßt sich die Funktion syntaktisch auffälliger und unauffälliger Teilsätze erfassen.
