Die klassisch-arabische Syntax zeichnet sich im Bereich der komplexen Satze u.a. durch den Wechsel syndetischer, mit Konjunktion angeschlossener, und asyndetischer, ohne Konjunktion verbundener, Konstruktionen aus, die mit spezifischen satzsyntaktischen Funktionen verknupft sind. Auf der Basis eines umfangreichen Korpus von althocharabischen Prosatexten zur Prophetenbiographie und zu den Schlachtentagen der Araber werden verschiedene Satztypen wie die syndetischen Umstands- und Finalsatze mit ihren konjunktionslosen Pendants, Konstruktionen mit asyndetischer Suffix- und Prafixkonjugation, partizipiale Satztypen sowie raising und die Konstruktion der Funktionsverben in formaler und funktionaler Hinsicht ausfuhrlich dargestellt. Die Arbeit ist funktional orientiert und versucht mit Hilfe des Modells der Junktion, den syntaktischen Status der behandelten Satztypen zu bestimmen und ein alternatives Bild des althocharabischen komplexen Satzes zu entwerfen. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass Syndese und Asyndese im Althocharabischen im Allgemeinen morphosyntaktisch und funktional klar getrennt sind, und dass gleichzeitig die dokumentierten semantischen Uberschneidungen wohl definiert werden konnen. Die Studie bereichert das Verstandnis der klassisch-arabischen Syntax; ein ausfuhrliches Stellenregister erschliesst die zahlreichen in der Arbeit zitierten althocharabischen Belegstellen.

This book explores the relationship between the so-called ventive morpheme in Akkadian (-am) and the related suffixes -n and -a in other Semitic languages, including Amarna Canaanite, Ugaritic, Hebrew, and Arabic. Using formal reconstructions of the various morphemes and a functional analysis of their different usages, Ambjörn Sjörs convincingly argues that these endings are cognate morphemes that were formally and functionally related to the ventive morpheme in Akkadian. Sjörs provides a systematic description of non-allative ventive verbs in Old Babylonian, the energic and volitive in Amarna Canaanite, the energic and lengthened prefix conjugation in Ugaritic, the lengthened imperfect consecutive in Biblical Hebrew, and the subjunctive and energic in Classical Arabic. Sjörs explains how these verb forms were used within the framework of grammaticalization theory and demonstrates how the suffixes are historically related. Clearly and persuasively argued, Motion, Voice, and Mood in the Semitic Verb sheds valuable light on the Akkadian ventive and its relationship to the other related morphemes.
