Savannah in History features over 90 sites in Savannah, Georgia, presented organized by historical era, with over 100 color photos. This presentation is especially important for a city with a long and varied history like Savannah, where colonial sites are virtually next door to antebellum, Civil War, and important modern sites. This guidebook conveys a clear picture of the evolution of the city from its beginnings to the present and helps the tourist, and even the resident, unravel and understand the dozens of historic buildings and monuments and several excellent museums. Like the others in this series on St. Augustine, Key West, Charleston, and Tampa, it serves as both a guidebook and keepsake.

Join authors Brenna and T.C. Michaels as they explore Savannah's long, wide and very often hidden history. Savannah has repeatedly stood on the edge of ruin, brought to its knees by bloody battles, mysterious pestilence, fire, unforgiving weather and the drums of war. Men and women whose names echo in history once walked its streets. Countless other faces are seemingly forgotten, names that history held in looser grip - like Mary Musgrove, the colonial translator and entrepreneur, or Dr. Samuel Nunes, shipwrecked by chance on Savannah's coastal shores just in time to curb a deadly epidemic and save Savannah's first settlers. And then there's John Geary, the larger-than-life Union general who beat Sherman's march south to the sea.

From the cotton boom after the Civil War to Savannah's economic decline around the middle of the 20th century, the city's streetscapes were crowded with signs. In a time before strict sign regulations, business owners embellished building facades and and rooftops with extensive signage to catch the eye of pedestrians and motorists. The abundance of advertising was symbolic of Savannah's rapid growth and prosperity, but the majority of these signs were discarded over the years, and only a few remain. Photographs and postcards from the past survive, however, and images of historic signs serve as reminders of these lost commercial relics. Such signs give the bricks and mortar of the past another dimension by identifying their social purpose. Through vintage images of Savannah signage, this volume provides a history of the city's businesses and industries. Included are local landmarks like Levy Jewelers, the Globe Shoe Company, the Lucas Theatre, the Marshall House, and Johnny Harris Restaurant.

Savannah, Georgia was home to one of the most notable Civil War moments, naval battles, and has a deep Civil War past. Noted local filmmaker and author tells the stories of Savannah's deep engagement in the conflict. Union general William T. Sherman cemented Savannah's most notable Civil War connection when he ended his "March to the Sea" there in December 1864. However, more fascinating stories from the era lurk behind the city's ancient, moss-draped live oaks. A full-scale naval battle raged between ironclad warships just offshore. More than seven thousand prisoners were confined in the area surrounding Forsyth Park. And on March 21, 1861, the present-day Savannah Theatre was the site of one of the most inflammatory and controversial speeches of the entire war. Noted local filmmaker and author Michael Jordan delves deep into this fabled city's Civil War past.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ...out of their dwellings, but in many cases they were forced to flee to avoid being crushed in the ruins of their own houses. Hutchinson plantation and the rice plantations around the city were inundated, causing over one hundred negroes to be drowned. Trees in every part of the city were blown down, and also several houses. The wharves were all torn up and many of the storehouses erected at the foot of the bluff were either totally destroyed or so much damaged as to render valueless everything within them. Eighteen vessels in the harbor were thrown upon the wharves and several were totally destroyed. Several persons were injured by the falling houses or chimneys and three died of the injuries received. The exchange, the filature, jail and courthouse on the bluff, with twenty-six business houses under the bluff were injured and their stock of goods swept away. The steeple of the Presbyterian Church, on the southwest corner of Whitaker and President streets, fell in a southwesterly direction, crushing in a house and cutting off a portion of a bed on which lay a sick man, but fortunately he was not injured. Strange to say the bell in the steeple was found unbroken and afterwards hung in the steeple of the Independent Presbyterian Church, where it remained until 1824, when a larger bell was presented to the congregation. The first seal used.by the city of Savannah was presented by Alderman Samuel Stirke, and it is unfortunate that no trace or imprint of it can be found. It was probably used for several years, as we find no record ofa new one being provided until January I4, 1805, when a resolution was adopted by the council instructing the clerk to " procure a screw-press for the city seal the expense of which will be defrayed by the...
