This book is the story of South Sudanese Australians, told in their own voices. At one level, it’s a single story: a story of war, of loss, of violent displacement, of the rupturing of ordinary life for these people. It tells of years in refugee camps, of the journeys that brought them to Australia, and of the new life they’re forging for themselves and their families here. But this story has been experienced by individuals, by ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events, events that have become all too common in our present world. Before Syria, South Sudan had already become a byword for never-ending, relentless civil war, famine, and desperate children, women, and men. So the story is multi-facetted. It’s many stories, and those are the personal stories that make up this book. Some of those stories, those of the Lost Boys, have already been told in books, film, and song. There’s almost nothing yet from others, especially from the women whose lives were also shattered by these wars. Their stories are of the loss of children, parents, and husbands, of the deaths and forced abandonment of newborns, of multiple forced displacements. But the stories are also stories of survival and resilience. The twenty-seven people who tell their stories in this book recount the different routes that finally brought them to Australia, of their gratitude to be in a country with no war, and of their determination to make a contribution and to forge a good life here, for themselves, and especially for their families and children, demonstrating how wrong are political accusations of non-integration and sensationalist reporting about ‘African gangs’ in Melbourne.

Growing up in suburban Illinois, Robin Wiszowaty leads a typical middle-class American life. Hers is a world of gleaming shopping malls, congested freeways, and neighborhood gossip. But from an early age, she has longed to break free of this existence and discover something deeper. What it is, she doesn't quite know. Yet she knows in her heart there simply has to be more. Through a fortunate twist of fate, Robin seizes an opportunity to travel to rural Kenya and join an impoverished Maasai community. Suddenly her days are spent hauling water, evading giraffes, and living in a tiny hut made of cow dung with her adoptive family. She is forced to face issues she's never considered: extreme poverty, drought, female circumcision, corruption — and discovers love in the most unexpected places. In the open wilds of the dusty savannah, this Maasai life is one she could never have imagined.

Retrofitting Suburbia Updated Edition written by Ellen Dunham-Jones and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-23 with Architecture categories.

Updated with a new Introduction by the authors and a foreword by Richard Florida, this book is a comprehensive guide book for urban designers, planners, architects, developers, environmentalists, and community leaders that illustrates how existing suburban developments can be redesigned into more urban and more sustainable places. While there has been considerable attention by practitioners and academics to development in urban cores and new neighborhoods on the periphery of cities, there has been little attention to the redesign and redevelopment of existing suburbs. The authors, both architects and noted experts on the subject, show how development in existing suburbs can absorb new growth and evolve in relation to changed demographic, technological, and economic conditions. Retrofitting Suburbia was named winner in the Architecture & Urban Planning category of the 2009 American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (The PROSE Awards) awarded by The Professional and Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of American Publishers

Lost Savannah written by Luciana M. Spracher and has been published by Arcadia Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-03 with History categories.

Since its founding over 250 years ago, Savannah, Georgia has become a historic preservation gold mine, exhibiting a variety of architectural styles. However, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area experienced heavy economic growth, during which numerous buildings were demolished regardless of age or condition to make way for newer and supposedly better structures. The community lost many important landmarks, architectural masterpieces, and a piece of its history. Lost Savannah takes a close look at these vanished buildings to document their existence and role in Savannah's past. Drawing on collections of the Georgia Historical Society, a rich presentation of Savannah's public, private, and commercial architecture has been brought together in this unique photographic volume. Through vintage images, one can see the city's development and growth as well as its subsequent decay prior to the preservation movement. Lost Savannah examines individual buildings, such as Union Station and the Bulloch-Habersham House, as well as the evolution of Savannah's architectural landscape, including West Broad Street and Elbert Square.
