The majority of books in English on historic building conservation and heritage preservation training are often restricted to Western architecture and its origins. Consequently, the history of building conservation, the study of contemporary paradigms and case studies in most universities and within wider interest circles, predominantly in the UK, Europe, and USA focus mainly on Europe and sometimes the USA, although the latter is often excluded from European publications. With an increasingly multicultural student body in Euro-American universities and with a rising global interest in heritage preservation, there is an urgent need for publications to cover a larger geographical and social area including not only Asia, Australia, Africa and South America but also previously neglected countries in Europe like the new members of the European Community and the northern neighbour of the USA, Canada. The inclusion of the ‘other’ in built environment education in general and in building conservation in particular is a pre-requisite of cultural interaction and widening participation. International Heritage and Historic Building Conservation assesses successful contemporary conservation paradigms from around the world. The book evaluates conservation case studies from previously excluded areas of the world to create an integrated account of Historic Building Conservation that crosses the boundaries of language and culture and sets an example for further inclusive research. Analyzing the influence of financial constraints, regional conflicts, and cultural differences on the heritage of disadvantaged countries, this leading-edge volume is essential for researchers and students of heritage studies interested in understanding their topics in a wider framework.

Saving Social written by Ryan Holmes and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Online social networks categories.

Social media is broken -- or at least it appears that way. To many, the industry seems to have come undone, but what if, in fact, it's just coming together? As social media has become integrated into both business and mainstream culture, we've seen euphoric novelty give way to hysteria around the ill effects of misinformation, data privacy and polarizing echo chambers. Now, as everything from the ethics behind algorithms to the legal shield social networks use to protect themselves from liability is being discussed at the highest levels of government, many are wondering if social media's problems are simply too great to fix. Against the backdrop of a global crisis, Ryan Holmes, the Founder and Chairman of Hootsuite, takes a sobering look at concerns surrounding the social media industry today and offers an optimistic view of where it's headed. Holmes argues that the hysteria we're experiencing now is part of a natural lifecycle all game-changing communication technologies go through before finding balance. As North America faces a global pandemic and societal unrest, social media has become more crucial than ever. Holmes' incisive combination of history and future-think will help industry insiders and average readers alike understand the potential and pitfalls of social media and map out a plan to thrive in the years ahead.

Saving San Antonio written by Lewis F. Fisher and has been published by Trinity University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-22 with History categories.

Few American cities enjoy the likes of San Antonio's visual links with its dramatic past. The Alamo and four other Spanish missions, recently marked as a UNESCO World Heritage site, are the most obvious but there are a host of landmarks and folkways that have survived over the course of nearly three centuries that still lend San Antonio an "odd and antiquated foreignness." Adding to the charm of the nation's seventh largest city is the San Antonio River, saved to become a winding linear park through the heart of downtown and beyond and a world model for sensitive urban development. San Antonio's heritage has not been preserved by accident. The wrecking balls and headlong development that accompanied progress in nineteenth-century San Antonio roused an indigenous historic preservation movement—the first west of the Mississippi River to become effective. Its thrust has increased since the mid-1920s with the pioneering work of the San Antonio Conservation Society. In Saving San Antonio, Texas historian Lewis Fisher peels back the myths surrounding more than a century of preservation triumphs and failures to reveal a lively mosaic that portrays the saving of San Antonio's cultural and architectural soul. The process, entertaining in the telling, has reverberated throughout the United States and provided significant lessons for the built environments and economies of cities everywhere.

Saving The Seed written by Renee Vellve and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-05 with Law categories.

Genetic diversity is essential to the security of agriculture. Without the availability of a wide range of plant varieties and the genetic resources they contain, crops cannot adapt to combat the ever-changing threats of pests, diseases and climatic change. Yet, with the increasing industrialisation of modern agriculture, farming has become a business which centres on a handful of new, genetically similar 'super seeds'. Plants must evolve in order to survive, but modern agriculture has replaced diversity with uniformity, and security with vulnerability. Saving the Seed traces the decline of crop varieties in European farming and describes what is being done to safeguard genetic resources for the future. Conservation efforts by government and industry suffer from serious drawbacks, with wrangles over ownership and control of resources. The crucial work is being done by individuals and grassroots organisations, who largely go unrecognised and under-resourced. What is urgently needed are sound policies to promote the diversification of agriculture and an integrated strategy for safeguarding the genetic base of our food system. Saving the Seed contains the most up-to-date information available on genetic resources in Europe and on those working to save them. Renee Vellve is a researcher at GRAIN, a no-governmental organisation working to promote the sustainable conservation and use of genetic diversity, based on grassroots approaches to genetic resources management. Saving Our Prepositions written by David Thatcher and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-06 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Prepositions (words like above, from, in, of and with which relate one part of a sentence to another) are, though few in number, among the most frequently used words in English. They are also among the most frequently misused: writers and speakers alike seem to have endless trouble in choosing the right or acceptable preposition. The sad result is widespread uncertainty, confusion and misunderstanding. Addressed to both native speakers and to learners of English as a second language, Saving our Prepositions: A Guide for the Perplexed offers many examples of standard and non-standard practice with the aim of helping its readers avoid slipping up on what have been called “the banana peels of modern speech.” Informative as well as entertaining, this timely guide will be of interest and value to all who cherish the English language and want to use it clearly and effectively.
