Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol spans more than 900 pages and covers the gamut of human life and aspiration, the meaning of existence and the evolutionary development of consciousness. Sri M.P. Pandit has systematically gone verse by verse through this epic and highlighted the sense and opened the meaning to us with his brief commentary or meditation on the themes thus revealed. Sri Pandit was secretary to the Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. He wrote and lectured extensively on Sri Aurobindo’s yoga and the Mother’s transformational work. The current volume X is the final volume in the series, and covers Book X, canto IV, Book XI and Book XII. The volume also includes a line index to Savitri to aid the seeker in identifying the source of virtually any passage in the text. The index contains the first portion of all 23,803 lines in Savitri making it an invaluable tool for anyone studying the text

Publishers' Note Sri Aurobindo's epic Savitri was written in three parts containing twelve Books. Part One was first published in September 1950, before his withdrawal in December that year; Part Two and Part Three came out as a single volume a few months later, in 1951. We are now publishing this 1950-1951 Edition of Savitri in a suitable format with section and sentence indexing. It is felt that this Savitri Digital-friendly Edition will prove much useful for various types of mobile or other new digital devices as it will enable referencing and navigation in a quick and convenient way. *** The Tale of Satyavan and Savitri The tale of Satyavan and Savitri is recited in the Mahabharata as a story of conjugal love conquering death. But this legend is, as shown by many features of the human tale, one of the many symbolic myths of the Vedic cycle. Satyavan is the soul carrying the divine truth of being within itself but descended into the grip of death and ignorance; Savitri is the Divine Word, daughter of the Sun, goddess of the supreme Truth who comes down and is born to save; Aswapati, the Lord of the Horse, her human father, is the Lord of Tapasya, the concentrated energy of spiritual endeavour that helps us to rise from the mortal to the immortal planes; Dyumatsena, Lord of the Shining Hosts, father of Satyavan, is the Divine Mind here fallen blind, losing its celestial kingdom of vision, and through that loss its kingdom of glory. Still this is not a mere allegory, the characters are not personified qualities, but incarnations or emanations of living and conscious Forces with whom we can enter into concrete touch and they take human bodies in order to help man and show him the way from his mortal state to a divine consciousness and immortal life. We present here the text of the First Edition of Savitri with accent-marks; these are indicated with the font in red colour. The scansion of the lines could be left to the individual's perception; but we should mention that we are not considering half-accents which on occasions can fall on vowels in the rhythmic flow of the lines. It must also be noted that some accents could change from context to context, and from person to person. The subjective element in the rhythm must be recognised while reading or reciting poetry, principally the poetry of the mystic-spiritual kind where both inner sound and silence count the most.Let us take an example or two from the present Book of Savitri, from Canto Eleven, The Kingdoms and Godheads of the Greater Mind. Here is the first: "The ríven invísible átom's omnípotent fórce." This line is noteworthy in more than one respect. What we immediately notice in it is its abounding and packed dense breath even though it is a fourteener, a line which is yet pentametric. It can be scanned as an iamb followed by four wonderful anapaests, something which is most unusual if not unique in poetry. The compression of vowels gives it diamond-like solidity carrying the power that seems to come from its shining omnipotence. Add to that its incredible rhythmic and alliterative insistence, a sound bursting out of some brilliant hush. Just feel the "riven atom", and you have a yogic miracle in it. It is not Shelley's "intense atom" glowing for a moment and getting quenched in the dust. Here is "mightiness in the atom shut to rest". In it is the possibility of the stars reincarnating themselves, bringing a new civilisation, ushering a new age. The potentiality of the "riven atom" was seen much long before Fermi demonstrated his chain reaction in a nuclear reactor, on 2 December 1942. The line is present in a Savitri-draft written quite prior to the atomic weapon used powerfully in the Second World War. In fact as early as in 1940, Sri Aurobindo noted: "Now there is disintegration of the atom and the power that is released at it, humanity must step in; otherwise they can blow up humanity and human civilisation." In a sonnet dated 25 September 1939 he wrote it to the same effect, that the scientist might play with the atom and blow up the world before God would have time to shout. The glistening metrical intensity of the line-The riven invisible atom's omnipotent force-conveys the Yogi's hold on things, both secular and occult-spiritual, as much as the Master-Poet's command over the technique put into forceful operation. From another angle let us take another example, regarding scansion. The line that could interest us is: "Thoughts whose desire new-makes the universe." There are a couple of ways in which the line could be divided in its metrical units. Thus we could have "Thóúghts whose| desí|re néw|-makes the ún|iverse|"-"desíre" can be read as an iamb or an amphibrach-or "Thóúghts whose| desíre| new-mákes| the ún|iverse|" or "Thóúghts whose| desíre| néw-makes |the ún|iverse|" or "Thóúghts whose| desíre| néw-mákes| the ún|iverse|", the last with a spondee in the middle which perhaps brings out with a force the possibility what the desire of the thoughts can do. But finally it could be left to the individual's perception. We hope that the present attempt of bringing out the text with accent-marks will prove rewarding to the lovers of poetry, and in particular of Savitri in its metrical power, its rhythm and melody, its undertones and overtones, its volume and pitch and timbre, its nada and laya and chhanda, they carrying the "seed-sounds of the eternal Word", they moving in the felicity of "rhythmic calm and joy"; possibly it would take us closer to the yogic source from which it originated. Savitri Foundation is glad to put in this pioneering effort towards metrical presentation of Sri Aurobindo's epic.

Almost all of the essays collected in this volume were written for and first published as monthly instalments in Next Future, the e-journal of the Sri Aurobindo Society Pondicherry. The 47 instalments ended with the passing of Dr. Nadkarni in September 2007, and cover Savitri Book by Book, Canto by Canto, from the beginning up to the climactic point in the middle of Book Eleven, where Savitri is offered four boons of merger with the Supreme, and asks instead for the Supreme Peace, Oneness, Energy and Bliss ‘for Earth and Men’. Dr. Nadkarni has written other essays on Savitri as well as giving many other talks, but this collection represents a masterly ‘Introduction’ (as he modestly called it) to the revelatory poem which he loved so much and understood so well. It has been compiled and published at the request of his family, and we feel sure that it will be welcomed by Savitri readers and students all over the world, and to a certain extent make up for the great loss that his many admirers experienced when he passed away in September 2007 at the age of 74.
