Throughout its modern history, China has suffered from immense destruction and loss of life from warfare. During its worst period of warfare, the eight years of the Anti-Japanese War (1937-45), millions of civilians lost their lives. For China, the story of modern war-related death and suffering has remained hidden. Hundreds of massacres are still unrecognized by the outside world and even by China itself. The focus of this original hisotry is on the social and psychological, not the economic, costs of war on the country.

Excluding the capture of New Orleans, the military affairs in southeast Louisiana during the American Civil War have long been viewed by scholars and historians has having no strategic importance during the war. As such, no such serious effort to chronicle the war in that portion of the state has been attempted, except Peas earlier book, Touched By War: Battles Fought in the Lafourche District (1998). That book covered the military affairs in southeast Louisiana that led to the five major battles fought in that region between fall 1862 and summer 1863. Beyond that point, little is chronicled, until now. In this thoroughly researched and authoritative book, Scarred By War: Civil War in Southeast Louisiana, Christopher Pea has revised and updated his earlier work and expanded the scope to include a study of the remaining two years of the war, a period filled with intense Confederate guerilla warfare. The literary result is a book that recounts the political, social, military, and economic aspects of the war as they played out in southeast Louisianas bayou country.

Scars Of War Wounds Of Peace The Israeli Arab Tragedy written by Shlomo Ben-Ami Former Foreign Minister of Israel and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-06 with Political Science categories.

An Oxford-trained historian who became Israeli Foreign Minister, Shlomo Ben-Ami was a key figure in the Camp David negotiations and many other rounds of peace talks, public and secret, with Palestinian and Arab officials. He offers here an unflinching account of the Arab-Israeli conflict, informed by his firsthand knowledge of the major characters and events. Clear-eyed and unsparing, Ben-Ami traces the twists and turns of the Middle East conflict and the many missteps of the Israelis and Palestinians. The author paints particularly trenchant portraits of key figures from Ben-Gurion to Bill Clinton, and gives us behind-the-scenes accounts of the meetings in Oslo, Madrid, and Camp David. He is highly critical of Ariel Sharon and the late Yasser Arafat ("the sad embodiment of an archaic political orthodoxy devoid of a vision for the future"). He sees Arafat's rejection of Clinton's peace plan as a crime against the Palestinian people. The author is also critical of President Bush's Middle East policy ("a presumptuous grand strategy"). And along the way, Ben-Ami highlights the many blunders on both sides, describing for instance how the great victory of the Six Day War launched many Israelis on a misbegotten "messianic" dream of controlling all the Biblical Jewish lands, actually making the Palestinian problem much worse. In contrast, it has only been when Israel has suffered setbacks that it has made moves towards peace. The best hope for the region, he concludes, is to create an international mandate in the Palestinian territories that would lead to the implementation of Clinton's two-state peace parameters. Scars of War, Wounds of Peace is a major work of history--with by far the most fair and balanced critique of Israel ever to come from one of its key officials. It is an absolute must-read for everyone who wants to understand the dynamics of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

At the height of its power, with the world watching, some in envy, others waiting to see the downfall, America is at a crossroads. Will the United States of America dominate the world scene for another hundred years or will internal decay and lack of a common course take it the way of other great empires in the past? Rome, Carthage, Greece, the Soviet Union, and many others who stepped onto the world stage have exited - some in infamy, others in ruin. Greider shows the rich history of America from those who left Europe to find opportunity and religious freedom, and were blessed in their efforts as long as they served God and revered the principles found in the Holy Scriptures. The Founding Fathers were deeply religious men who sought inspiration and received divine guidance. Forces at work today, including the pluralistic mix of our citizenry and the trend toward a post-Christian culture, are reshaping the American Ideal. In his book, America, Renewal or Ruin, Greider sees the potential for American youth to find and promote renewal in their quest for moral stability if guided by visionary leaders in a conflicted world. History has shown that reawakenings are possible. Now is the time, according to Greider, to call upon those whose roots are embedded in their Christian heritage to wake up and take back their country, resisting the forces of ruin. Perhaps our nation has gone too far in jettisoning the values upon which it was founded. If any culture is to survive, it must stand for something. If not, citizens will fall for anything that is served up in titillating packaging and played to the base appetites of the flesh. Our country needs a revival of spirit and a clear sense of morality and propriety. Greider shows in his book America: Renewal or Ruin that there is a cause for every effect and the cause of America greatness lay in the goodness of her people. The Founding Fathers were deeply religious men who claimed to owe their dependence and guidance on God and his Word. America is rapidly moving away from its Christian roots and the ominous signs of moral, social and cultural decay are ever present.

War is not romantic. It is bleeding and dying and holding a lifeless comrade in your arms. It is storming a beach through a hail of bullets. It is fighter planes spiraling from the sky and Americans being taken captive. In Scars of War, author Marilyn Swinson tells true and often horrifying stories of war. Based on one-on-one interviews with more than forty veterans, all members of the Combat Airmen/Joshuas Troops of Mayodan, North Carolina, Swinson brings the narratives to life as the soldiers relay a variety of war experiences: a soldier aboard a ship moored at Pearl Harbor on that fateful December morning when Japanese bombs rained fire from the sky, and a seventeen-year-old young man forced to endure the horrors of the Bataan Death March, only to face three and a half years of torture and deprivation in Japanese concentration camps. A pilot lives to fly again after his plane hits the ground traveling three hundred miles per hour, igniting sixteen thousand pounds of jet fuel. A battle-weary Marine finally sees Old Glory raised on Iwo Jima. Scars of War provides a firsthand account of the pathos and pageantry of war from those who survived.
