From Proust to Beckett, from Blanchot to Derrida from Freud to Lacan, and from Lévi-Strauss to René Girard, all of our theories of modernity have been predicated upon a nostalgia for the real. In this lively and perceptive diagnosis of the malaise of contemporary theorists, Josué Harari interprets the French Enlightenment in terms of the relationship between theory and the imaginary, and explores the paradox by which theories that purport to describe the real lack any dimension of reality. Through readings of texts by some of the progenitors of influential modem theories, Harari explores the working strategies of the imaginary. In particular, he illuminates the founding moment, an instant of personal crisis for the author, during which a theory is infused by a fictional scenario: Montesquieu's "phantasm" of the body, resulting in his theory of government; Rousseau's narcissistic delirium in Emile, resulting in his theory of education; the theory of psychoanalysis, resulting from Freud's unconscious motives for choosing the Oedipal theory over the seduction theory of neurosis; and the theory of structural anthropology, generated by a psychodrama in Tristes Tropiques which Harari reads as a symptom of Lévi-Strauss's anguish when he is confronted with reality. Two striking chapters on Sade at the center of the book reveal the operation of the theoretical imaginary in libertine discourse. Scenarios of the Imaginary will find a wide audience among students and scholars of French literature, particularly of the eighteenth century, and of contemporary French thought, and among comparativists, literary theorists, anthropologists, and historians.

This book offers a new approach to imagination which brings its emotional, social, cultural, contextual and existential characteristics to the fore. Fantasy and imagination are understood as the human capacity to distance oneself from the here?and?now situation in order to return to it with new possibilities. To do this we use social?cultural means (e.g. language, stories, art, images, etc.) to conceive of imaginary scenarios, some of which may become real. Imagination is involved in every situation of our lives, though to different degrees. Sometimes this process can lead to concrete products (e.g., artistic works) that can be picked up and used by others for the purposes of their imagining. Imagination is not seen here as an isolated cognitive faculty but as the means by which people anticipate and constructively move towards an indeterminate future. It is in this process of living forward with the help of imagination that novelty appears and social change becomes possible. This book offers a conceptual history of imagination, an array of theoretical approaches, imagination’s use in psychologist’s thinking and a number of new research areas. Its aim is to offer a re?enchantment of the concept of imagination and the discipline of psychology more generally.

Much is at stake when we choose a word for a form of violence: whether a conflict is labeled civil war or genocide, whether we refer to “enhanced interrogation techniques” or to “torture,” whether a person is called a “terrorist” or a “patriot.” Do these decisions reflect the rigorous application of commonly accepted criteria, or are they determined by power structures and partisanship? How is the language we use for violence entangled with the fight against it? In Naming Violence, Mathias Thaler articulates a novel perspective on the study of violence that demonstrates why the imagination matters for political theory. His analysis of the politics of naming charts a middle ground between moralism and realism, arguing that political theory ought to question whether our existing vocabulary enables us to properly identify, understand, and respond to violence.
