Excerpt from Scenes and Stories of the North of Scotland This book has been written with a three-fold aim: to awaken interest, to stimulate, and to amuse. The scenes described have been selected chiefly from parts of Scotland which are remote, or aside, from the ordinary thoroughfares of travel, and are therefore less known than they deserve to be. I have tried to present them as vividly as possible, so as to awaken in others an interest in them. If many more travellers are induced to visit these localities, they will not be disappointed, and I shall be pleased. Again, no one reaps full benefit from travel who does not go to and fro with open eyes, open ears, open mind, and open heart. What a pitiful lot are many of our modern sight "do"-ers, who take in no more from nature than the eye of a calf might do! Not for these do I write; but for very many - I hope the majority after all - who long to taste the sweet secrets of nature, and through these to reach a better knowledge of her great Author. I like to think that God, Who has made all that is beautiful and grand, and has given to us any sense or love of these which we possess, is Himself the prime Admirer of the varied scenery of His world. Excerpt from Scenes and Legends of the North of Scotland: Or the Traditional History of Cromarty The present edition contains about one-third more matter than the first. The added chapters, however, like those which previously composed the work, were almost all written about twenty years ago,1 in leisure hours snatched from a laborious employment, or during the storms of winter, when the worker in the open air has to seek shelter at home. But it is always less disadvantageous to a traditionary work, that it should have been written early than late. Of the materials wrought up into the present volume, the greater part was gathered about from fifteen to twenty years earlier still; and though some thirty-five or forty years may not seem a very lengthened period, such has been the change that has taken place during the lapse of the generation which has in that time disappeared from the earth, that perhaps scarce a tithe of the same matter could be collected now. We live in an age unfavourable to tradition, in which the written has superseded the oral. As the sun rose in his strength, the manna wasted away like hoar frost from off the ground. Excerpt from Picturesque Scotland: Its Romantic Scenes and Historical Associations Described in Lay and Legend, Song and Story Whilst it is hoped that the volume may find some favour in the eyes of many who are interested in Scot land, it. Is, perhaps, specially suited for those whom some distance of space or time separates from North Britain, and to whom the features of Scottish scenery and Scottish life are matters of memory or tradition, not of experience. There are many omissions. The reader will under stand that the space of one volume was far too small for the full treatment, or even mention, of all the various objects that presented themselves. The com pilers take this opportunity of acknowledging the assistance they have received in passing this book through the press from Mr. C. W. Redin. It only remains to add that Articles 13 - 15, 30 - 38, 40 - 73, 97, 102 - 110, and 114 inclusive, are the work of the author first mentioned below, and the remainder of the volume of the second mentioned. Excerpt from The Great North of Scotland Railway: A Guide "Far away fowls have fair feathers," is a proverb that indicates a very common feeling. Distant places are run after for scenery and associations, though places near at hand may be equally interesting or equally beautiful. Because they are near and easily accessible, it does not seem worth while to notice them; or their inspection can be so easily accomplished, that it is put off from day to day. And yet these scenes and associations may be well worthy of attention, and productive of much interest and pleasure, when visited and inquired into. Probably the general tourist has little idea of the beauty of many parts of the country through which the Great North of Scotland railway passes. It is off the usual line of travel, and, except to the few who have local connections, it is not generally known. In the hope of attracting more attention to it on the part of the travelling public, these notices of it are put together. The great North of Scotland Railway, including all that is worked by the Company, is 2871/2 miles in length. Of this the Deeside Line (431/2 miles) is to a certain extent an independent branch, that is, it is separated from the main line and branches, lying through a different district of country from that traversed by it. Starting from Aberdeen, the main line proper runs north to Keith, 531/4 miles, throwing off five branches, two of which also subdivide. I. The Formartine and Buchan Section leaves the main line at Dyce, and goes to Peterhead, 38 miles. It subdivides at Maud, and sends a branch to Fraserburgh, 16 miles.
