Excerpt from Scenes in the Coal Regions The Anthracite Coal Regions of Pennsylvania, present to the visitor many attractive features, and many that. While not attractive in the strict sense of the word, are of interest to those in quest of information and experience. The huge culm piles, the great breakers, the massive machinery for hoisting and pumping, the long underground passages, wherein busy workers dig the coal, its trans portation to consumers; all these are of interest to the city dweller. Excerpt from The Making of America, Vol. 6: Mining and Metallurgy The geographical distribution oi our mineral resources could be fairly well shown in maps and charts, so far as ex ploration and development have revealed them. We might in that way show our assets, territorially distributed, but we would create a very erroneous opinion of their real value. With the most important minerals the economic value of a deposit is dependent upon many other considerations besides those of mere size and extent. Conspicuous among these are accessibility to markets, the means of transportation, natural or artificial, the existence of a supply of labor and the charu acter of that labor, climate, the character of the community, its laws, etc. These in their shifting influence find expression in the actual product, and that is a better measure of relative importance than mere location and extent. The latter, designated on maps by coloring, is a poor guide since relatively unimportant deposits may cover a very extended territory. Coal measured may underlie many thou sands Oi square miles, yet the seams which they enclose may not be numerous nor thick nor possess a coal of satisfactory quality. A field small in area, at some distant place, may be the scene of enormous operations, while the greater basin may hardly be able to supply local requirements. The anthracite coal regions, as to area, constitute only an exceedingly small portion of the known coal fields of the United States, yet their importance overshadows any other industrial district. A Fast Game Classic Reprint written by Kirk Parson and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-01 with categories.

Excerpt from A Fast Game The playground of A Fast Game is in north eastern Pennsylvania a few months previous to and during the suspension of the anthracite mine workers in the Spring of 1906. The causes and the effects of the battle between the giants Capitalism and Labor-unionism - are so dis cussed, that in the warp of a stirring story is woven the woof of some of the best ideas on the labor problem, advanced by some of the brain iest men - radical and conservative on both Sides - without destroying the interest in the narrative. Readers not familiar with those coal regions may consider some of the scenes overdrawn, but we think not. The prayer in the saloon; the refugee daughter sleeping on the grave of her parent; the death of Mrs. Morgan and her new born babe, and many other incidents are not fiction but cold facts. The growth of that part of the state, from rural districts to thriving centers of industry, has been rapid; a period to be spanned by a lifetime as told in the tale. The players in the game are the saints and the sinners who go to and fro in the earth - the only two divisions of the human kind Since the days of Adam, or ever will be, for that matter, so long as this old world shall be the arena. Work And Faith In The Kentucky Coal Fields written by Richard J. Callahan and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-20 with Religion categories.

Exploring themes of work and labor in everyday life, Richard J. Callahan, Jr., offers a history of how coal miners and their families lived their religion in eastern Kentucky's coal fields during the early 20th century. Callahan follows coal miners and their families from subsistence farming to industrial coal mining as they draw upon religious idioms to negotiate changing patterns of life and work. He traces innovation and continuity in religious expression that emerged from the specific experiences of coal mining, including the spaces and social structures of coal towns, the working bodies of miners, the anxieties of their families, and the struggle toward organized labor. Building on oral histories, folklore, folksongs, and vernacular forms of spirituality, this rich and engaging narrative recovers a social history of ordinary working people through religion.
