Toen de jonge Belgische natiestaat in 1831 een eigen grondwet kreeg, werd de volksjury opnieuw ingevoerd, niet alleen voor misdaden, maar ook voor politieke misdrijven en persmisdrijven. Dit boek gaat dieper in op deze laatste categorie, want in de afgelopen twee eeuwen is de juryrechtspraak in perszaken van een romantisch ideaal naar een constitutioneel fossiel geëvolueerd. De assisenhoven behandelen immers al lang geen perszaken meer en de grondwettelijke bepalingen zijn in de praktijk zo goed als dode letter geworden. Het verschil met de negentiende eeuw is groot. Het verhaal achter de persprocessen is meer dan het relaas van de negentiende-eeuwse grenzen van de persvrijheid. Het beschrijft ook hoe een generatie ambitieuze jongeren in 1831 een staatsmodel uittekende op grond van haar eigen zelfbeeld, maar mettertijd pragmatisch met de grenzen van de persvrijheid moest schuiven om haar positie te kunnen handhaven. This volume considers the uses and misuses of the memory of assistance given to Jews during the Holocaust, deliberated in local, national, and transnational contexts. Stories of heroic citizens who hid and rescued Jewish men, women, and children have been adapted into books, films, plays, public commemorations, and museum exhibitions. Yet, emphasis on the uplifting narratives often obscures the history of violence and complicity with Nazi policies of persecution and mass murder. Each of the ten essays in this interdisciplinary collection is dedicated to a different country: Belarus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
