Schelling came of age during the pivotal and exciting years at the end of the eighteenth century, as Kant's philosophy was being incorporated into the German academic world. Distinguishing himself from other thinkers of this period, in addition to delving into the new Kantian philosophy, Schelling engaged in an intense study of Plato's dialogues and was immersed in a Neoplatonic intellectual culture. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht, inwiefern das Böse die Systemidentität der christlichen Wirklichkeitsperspektive konstitutiv mitbestimmt. Ausgangspunkt ist dabei die Beobachtung, dass Theologie explizit heuristisch die Reflexion über das Böse vorantreiben muss, da sie weder der Vielstimmigkeit der Postmoderne das Wort reden noch dogmatistisch resignieren kann. Dies will die Arbeit mithilfe eines modelltheoretischen Zugangs leisten. Nach einer methodischen Orientierung zum Modellbegriff wird die strukturelle Rolle des Bösen bei sechs Autoren (früher und später Augustinus, Leibniz, Schelling, Hegel, Boyd) analysiert. Die dabei identifizierten Positionsunterschiede werfen zwölf Leitfragen auf, welche im modellsynthetischen Teil die Rekonstruktion von Freiheit, Gott und dem Bösen als Relate des christlichen Wirklichkeitsverständnisses orientieren. Auf Basis dieser Rekonstruktion kann schließlich gezeigt werden, dass dem Bösen keine konstitutive Rolle im christlichen Wirklichkeitsverständnis zukommen kann. Da aber endliche Freiheit unweigerlich das Böse in ihrer Individuation hervorbringt, stellt das Böse aufgrund der Identität des Individuums auch im futurischen Eschaton ein Relat dar – obgleich in transformierter Weise.

This book sheds new light on the fascinating – at times dark and at times hopeful – reception of classical Yoga philosophies in Germany during the nineteenth century. When debates over God, religion, and morality were at a boiling point in Europe, Sanskrit translations of classical Indian thought became available for the first time. Almost overnight India became the centre of a major controversy concerning the origins of western religious and intellectual culture. Working forward from this controversy, this book examines how early translations of works such as the Bhagavad Gītā and the Yoga Sūtras were caught in the crossfire of another debate concerning the rise of pantheism, as a doctrine that identifies God and nature. It shows how these theological concerns shaped the image of Indian thought in the work of Schlegel, Gunderrode, Humboldt, Hegel, Schelling, and others, lasting into the nineteenth century and beyond. Furthermore, this book explores how worries about the perceived nihilism of Yoga were addressed by key voices in the early twentieth century Indian Renaissance – notably Dasgupta, Radhakrishnan, and Bhattacharyya – who defended sophisticated counterreadings of their intellectual heritage during the colonial era.
