This book examines the topic of identity and collective memory in football fandom. Drawing on global research in history, sociology and political science, the book looks at how, where and why football fans and supporters’ groups introduce particular role models into their self-identity and performative narratives. The book presents original, cutting-edge research that illustrates the complex, multidimensional nature of the (re-)formulation of collective memory and the elevation of role models. It looks at the processes by which some supporters’ groups celebrate historical and contemporary figures – including political leaders, warriors, revolutionaries, or armed resistance groups – that they believe embody patriotic, regional or nationalist virtues, as well as supporters’ groups who define their patriotism in opposition to these figures. The book presents cases ranging from Ukrainian football ultras in the shadow of Russian aggression, and Jewish role models in Germany’s collective football memory, to the symbology of Che Guevara and Diego Maradona in Brazilian and Argentinian football, to hero formation and the myths of national identity in Australian football. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology, culture or politics of sport, or in fandom, identity, nationalism more broadly in sociology, political science or history.

The contributions to this volume Politics, Social Movements and Extremism take serious the fact that populism is a symptom of the crisis of representation that is affecting parliamentary democracy. Right-wing populism skyrocketed to electoral success and is now part of the government in several European countries, but it also shaped the Brexit campaign and the US presidential election. In Southern Europe, left-wing populism transformed the classical two parties systems into ungovernable three fractions parliaments, whereas in Latin America it still presents an instable alternative to liberal democracy. The varying consequences of populist mobilisation so far consist in the maceration of the established borders of political culture, the distortion of legislation concerning migrants and migration, and the emergence of hybrid regimes bordering on and sometimes leaning towards dictatorship. Yet, in order to understand populism, innovative research approaches are required that need to be capable of overcoming stereotypes and conceptual dichotomies which are deeply rooted in the political debate. The chapters of this volume offer such new theoretical strategies for inquiring into the multi-faceted populist phenomenon. The chapters analyse its language, concepts and its relationship to social media in an innovative way, draw the con - tours of left- and right-wing populism and reconstruct its shifting delimitation to political extremism. Furthermore, they value the most significant aftermath of populist mobilisation on the institutional frame of parliamentary democracy from the limitation of the freedom of press, to the dismantling of the separation of powers, to the erosion of citizenship rights. This volume will be an invaluable reference for students and scholars in the field of political theory, political sociology and European Studies.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Komparatistik, Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: 1,5, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: München war bereits vor 1980 häufig Schauplatz zahlreicher Fernsehsendungen, die alle die Stadt und ihre Bewohner zu charakterisieren versuchten. Dabei entstanden teilweise ähnliche Bilder, wie in der Literatur über München. Am prägendsten für das Bild Münchens in den 1980’ger Jahren war wohl der Begriff „Schickeria“. Vor allem für Nicht-Münchner ist durch Serien wie „Kir Royal“ oder „Monaco Franze“ wohl kein Begriff mit München mehr verbunden, als „Schickeria“. Mit diesem Begriff assoziiert man sofort Dinge, wie das Stadtviertel Schwabing, die Mode der 80’ger, Alkohol, Drogen und eine Gesellschaft der Schein wichtiger ist als Sein. Durch die Serien über die Schickeria wurde München in keinem besonders guten Licht präsentiert. Anstatt dem sympathischen, stark mit seinen bayrischen Umland verwurzelten Millionendorf, das man sonst als Stereotyp aus Film- und Fernsehen kannte, hatte man nun eine oberflächliche, verruchte Stadt vor Augen. Doch 1986 entstand nicht nur „Kir Royal“, die Serie, die den Begriff Schickeria wohl am meisten geprägt hat, sondern auch „Die Hausmeisterin“ die eine ganz andere Seite Münchens zeigt. Gibt es in Monaco Franze immer die zwei Welten von Franz Münchinger und seiner Frau Annette von Soettingen, also das normale und das „Schickeria- München“, scheint die Hausmeisterin die Schickeria völlig aus ihrer Welt auszuschließen (Dietl 2003: Folge TC 12:00). In Cornelia Zaglmann-Willingers Serie scheint es in München keine Schickeria zu geben, nicht einmal um sich gegen sie abzugrenzen. Obwohl also „Die Hausmeisterin“ zeitgleich mit Serien wie „Kir Royal“ spielt, scheint sie doch von einem ganz anderen München zu sprechen und das vielleicht mit Absicht. Bei genauerer Betrachtung ist die „Hausmeisterin“ fast so etwas wie der Gegenentwurf zum München der Schickeria. Doch bevor das näher untersucht wird, wird zunächst versucht festzulegen was Schickeria überhaupt ist.
