Van een proces is geen sprake: ze wordt monddood gemaakt. Haar geliefde Rembrandt van Rijn heeft daartoe opdracht gegeven. Vanuit het spinhuis blikt Geertje Dircx terug op haar leven. Ze is van eenvoudige komaf, wordt jong weduwe, maar weet zich te redden door als kindermeisje voor een welgestelde familie in Hoorn te werken. Als die betrekking eindigt, gaat ze naar Amsterdam en treedt ze in dienst bij Rembrandt van Rijn. Hij zoekt een kindermeisje voor zijn zoon Titus, omdat zijn vrouw Saskia ernstig ziek is. Na Saskia’s dood bestiert Geertje al snel het hele huishouden, zorgt voor Titus en voor de eenzame Rembrandt. Jarenlang leven ze als een getrouwd paar, en Rembrandt geeft haar de sieraden uit Saskia’s erfenis. Maar op een gegeven moment blijkt zijn liefde voor Geertje niets meer waard. Geertje laat het er niet bij zitten en klaagt de beroemde schilder aan. Simone van der Vlugt over Schilderslief: 'Het valt me op dat in het herdenkingsjaar van Rembrandt zijn liefdesrelatie en conflict met Geertje Dircz nergens ter sprake komen. Alsof men het daar liever niet over heeft, omdat het een heel ander licht op Rembrandt werpt. Maar ik vind het vooral belangrijk dat er eerherstel voor Geertje komt.'
