Theater of the Void explores contemporary German theater in the aftermath of the technology of the atomic bomb. Informed by threats of total annihilation—whether through nuclear technology or, more recently, global warming—German-language theater since the late 1970s encounters the void not as empty space or nothingness but as the possibility of radical transformation. Theater of the Void investigates theatrical forms that transform fundamental categories of time, space, and causality in light of the ontological and epistemological shifts of the nuclear age. Teresa Kovacs focuses on four directors and playwrights whose works offer insights into the theater of the void: Heiner Müller, Elfriede Jelinek, Christoph Schlingensief, and René Pollesch. Kovacs shows that contemporary German theater has not turned away from the sciences after Hiroshima and Nagasaki but has remained entangled with scientific thinking about quantum physics, biology, and the environment. Investigating these entanglements, Theater of the Void finds in the works of these German theater-makers a grammar of the void that speaks to the possibilities of a transformed theater in the Anthropocene.

Unter Anwendung des Empowerment-Ansatzes aus der Sozialen Arbeit wird untersucht, welcher sozialarbeitswissenschaftliche Ansatz im Operndorf verwirklicht wird. Dabei werden die Idee, Umsetzung und Kritik des Operndorfes sowie die praktische Anwendung des Empowerment-Konzeptes beleuchtet. Die Ergebnisse der Arbeit schließen somit eine Lücke in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung in Bezug auf das Operndorf und könnten für die Umsetzung ähnlicher Projekte von Bedeutung sein. Die wissenschaftliche Forschungsfrage wird wie folgt formuliert: „Welcher sozialarbeitswissenschaftliche Ansatz wird im Christoph Schlingensiefs Operndorf in Afrika verwirklicht?“ Um diese wissenschaftliche Forschungsfrage zu beantworten wird in dieser Bachelorarbeit von einer Hypothese ausgegangen: „Im Operndorf Afrika werden die Empowerment-Ansätze verwirklicht".

The volume examines from a comparative perspective the phenomenon of aesthetic disruption within the various arts in contemporary culture. It assumes that the political potential of contemporary art is not solely derived from presenting its audiences with openly political content, but rather from creating a space of perception and interaction using formal means: a space that makes hegemonic structures of action and communication observable, thus problematizing their self-evidence. The contributions conceptualize historical and contemporary politics of form in the media, which aim to be more than mere shock strategies, which are concerned not just with the ‘narcissistic’ exhibition of art as art, but also with the creation of a new common horizon of experience. They combine the analysis of paradigmatic works, procedures and actions with reference to theoretical debates in the fields of literature, media and art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The essay-collection shows how textual, visual, auditive or performative strategies disclose their own ways of functioning, intervene in automated processes of reception and thus work on stimulating a sense of political possibilities.
