According to Piaget, all higher-order thinking skills have their bases in activities involving concrete manipulation and observation. The third edition of this highly regarded collection of social studies activities continues to be based on the premise that children learn best through experiences and activities—learning by doing. It features new activities for each social studies category (geography, history, anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, and interdisciplinary). Three important new additions to the key elements of the easy-to-follow activity format make it easier for instructors to meet standards-based curriculum requirements: A detailed treatment of National Council of Social Studies standards addressed; specific multiple intelligences addressed (also reinforced by a multiple intelligences section in the back of the book); and useful Web site(s) for group/individual research (URLs for sites that will expand or enrich the learning experience for the activity). By engaging pupils in meaningful, worthwhile social studies activities, instructors can emphasize the processes of learning rather than the products, resulting in a richly rewarding experience for pupils and teacher alike.

This thesis stems from my experiences teaching book arts to college students, as well as observation of curricular activities in high school art classrooms. My belief that experimental book craft offers unique opportunities for problem solving in the art classroom led me to the research question: What occurs when students experience book construction in the context of their own understanding, and through the lens of do-it-yourself-ism? This raises related sub-questions: In what ways will the experience of creating DIY books shift or change students' perception/articulation of their own efficacy, competence, and ingenuity in the art classroom? And, how will students be equipped to use their ingenuity for further problem solving, and be better able/more motivated to teach others? The population for this study consisted of fifty-six 10th-12th grade students in two Art I classes at a selective enrollment public school on Chicago's northwest side. The duration of the project was 7 weeks of my apprentice-teaching placement in winter 2008. My participatory action research project included three segments. Models/structures were a series of traditional book forms learned through mediated and independent modalities. In the Teach someone segment, students taught one of the models/structures to a non-class member. The How-to book/hybrid included creating a single, content-driven structure using elements from the other learned structures. All segments of the research included written participant response forms. Data from the how-to/hybrid segment were also collected through videotapes of student-participants interacting with their books. Videotaping occurred on an unsupervised camera; prompts including "show the camera what your book does" encouraged thorough responses. My initial findings indicate that the student-participants' positive responses correlate to the amount of agency they experienced with the form. That is, if one either learned a form from another student or taught a form to someone else following a DIY model, s/he reported better understanding of the form and more interest in using the form. Further, a significant majority of student-participants demonstrated motivation to use learned forms in future endeavors, reporting feelings of efficacy when they felt competent to share structures with others. This research suggests that DIY book craft has the potential to improve students' sense of efficacy, competence and ingenuity in the classroom, and can offer opportunities to share art classroom learning in interdisciplinary or extracurricular ways. The positive experiences arising from such activities may help students build problem-solving skills necessary for responsible, engaged living in a rapidly changing world.
