SCHOOL DAYS II is the second part of an autobiography that began with School Days: Coming of Age in the Mid-20th Century (available at on-line booksellers). Although it primarily focuses on the author's personal life, it begins by describing the turmoil associated with himjoining the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh. He describes "debates" with Bill Gates, Milton Friedman, Senator Barry Goldwater and Vladimir Putin, travels around the world, several unique vacations and how his kids were able to maneuver him into getting an unwanted cat and dog and building an outdoor swimming pool in a cold-weather city. Two near-death experiences figure prominently--one involving SCUBA-diving in the Caribbean while breaking the rules of diving and one an overnight "lost-at-sea" incident in Maine. King describes himself as a pathological second-home acquirer leading him to becoming a farmer, learning to ski at an advanced age, acquiring a gas leasehold in the Marcellus Shale, sailboat, powerboat, all-terrain vehicle and snowmobile adventures and losing two homes to vandal-set fires.

Abstract: Results of the Second National Children and Youth Fitness Study (NCYFS II), conducted by the Public Health Service in 1985, are examined in this series of research articles. Initial analyses of the data indicate that the physical fitness of children ages 6 to 9 is significantly associated with activity behaviors of the children and their parents, that children weight more and have more body fat than they did 20 years ago, and that only about one-third of early elementary students take daily physical education classes. Topics examined in the research articles include 1) project history and design, 2) study procedures and quality control methods, 3) sample design, 4) new health-related fitness norms, 5) changes in the body composition of children, 6) the status of physical education programs in grades 1 through 4, 7) the contribution of home and community to children's exercise habits, and 8) the association between selected school, community, and home physical activity factors and health-related fitn ess. Actions that may enhance the future fitness and physical activity habits of children are considered.

The major purpose of research in the present study was to contribute to the clarification of physics-related learning conditions in the phase when students change from primary to secondary school stage. This purpose goes back to the divergent performance of German primary and secondary school students in the science part of international comparative studies which have placed teachers under considerable pressure to provide an effective working atmosphere in their classrooms including an appropriate use of time for engagement in physics-specific contents. There is a wide consensus that, in developing efficient classroom management strategies, teachers can guarantee a higher amount of academic learning time, which proves relevant not only for students' school performance, but also for fostering their motivation to learn (science). The present study firstly aimed at contributing to the demand of a theoretical conceptualization that regards classroom management in the overall structure of quality of instruction. Against this background, the study suggests a clear, detailed definition of classroom management with three subconstructs discipline, rules and rituals and prevention of disruption, but also addresses the desiderata in terms of subject-specific research on classroom management.
