This book has two purposes: To open up the debate on the role of informal education in schooling systems and to suggest the kind of school organizational environment that can best facilitate the recognition of informal learning. Successive chapters explore what is often seen as a duality between informal and formal learning. This duality is particularly so because education systems expend so much time and effort in certifying formal knowledge often expressed in school subjects reflecting academic disciplines.Recognizing the contribution informal learning can make to young people’s understanding and development does not negate the importance of valued social knowledge: That complements it. Students come to school with knowledge learnt from their families, peers, the community and both traditional and social media. They should not have to "unlearn" this in order to enter the world of formal learning. Rather, students’ different learning "worlds" should be integrated so that each informs the other. In a knowledge-based society, all learning needs to be valued. Some contributors to this book reflect on how new educational systems could be created in a move away from top-down authoritarian and bureaucratic management. Such open systems are seen to be more welcoming in acknowledging the importance of informal learning. Others provide practical examples of how informal learning is currently recognized. Some attention is also paid to the evaluation of informal learning. A key objective of the work presented here is to stimulate debate about the role of informal learning in knowledge-based societies and to stimulate thinking about the kind of reforms needed to create more open and more democratic school learning environments.

Counselors and educators are advocates for understanding ourselves, multiculturalism, and diversity in a societal climate of division. Provided the recent political coup and exclusion ideology, Latino Male students are marginalized because of cultural identity (Machismo) and cultural values. Due to the controversial nature of Machismo, masculinity, and language with Latino Males, multicultural educators are constantly silenced in universities by political correctness and censorship. Specifically, Latino Males are a direct target for incidences of racism, microaggressions, and oppression in our society. Colleges, universities, and counseling field has been moving forward slowly in its scope of “inclusion advocacy” for Latino Male students. There is a dearth in the empirical research on Latino Male experiences of otherness, indifference, and exclusion. The proposed textbook will establish viable, strategies to deepen cultural competence and inclusion advocacy. A competent framework for engagement is desperately needed in areas of inclusion, advocacy, and social justice for Latino Males. The convergence of sociopolitical views on diverse relationships has ignited an era of unrest, exclusion ideology, and remnants of mental distress and trauma in Latino communities. The textbook/reader will specifically address the issues of Latino Male Machismo in colleges and universities. This book compares the current status of democracy in selected Eastern European countries. The focus is on young people’s attitudes towards and experiences of democracy, including active political engagement. In many of these countries, democracy has been hard-won and may well need to be defended again in the future. The contributors collectively reflect on young adults exercising their civic rights and how they can influence the political system at both formal and informal levels. The chapters present different issues that arise in unique contexts but overall reflect the changing status of democracy and its effects on young people’s citizenship activity and education. The volume compares perspectives of three groups of Eastern European countries with different traditions and past histories of democracy and citizenship: Central European countries (Poland, Czech, Hungary); Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia); and post-soviet republics (Ukraine, Moldova). These countries differ in the status given to democracy, citizenship action traditions and education. At the same time, many countries have experienced recent turbulence related to democracy and different kinds of actions by young people.
