"Canada’s public schools reflect the nation-state’s settler colonial, neoliberal climate by reproducing and contributing to the systemic and structural inequities endured by colonized subjects. This qualitative, multiple case study examines the experiences of students and teachers at four alternative schools for marginalized students in Toronto, Ontario—particularly students who are poor and working class, racialized, identify as LGBTQ+, and/or live with disabilities or mental health issues—by investigating why these students leave mainstream schools, and in turn, whether alternative schools are serving these students’ needs via their relational dynamics, pedagogy, and curricula. Employing Grounded Theory, and based on interviews and focus groups with 19 students, 10 teachers, and one administrator, I argue that alternative schools are confined by institutional standards and provincial expectations that permeate state schools, and subsequently, are not devoid of neoliberal ideologies that blame, deviate, and pathologize marginalized students. Alternative schools nevertheless serve marginalized students as safe and caring communities that reject state schooling norms, resist bureaucratic schooling structures, provide extensive mental health assistance, and deliver some reformative pedagogy and curricula that tackle issues of oppression, notwithstanding the reality that alternative schools typically only mend symptoms of marginalization, rather than effectively transgress settler colonial and neoliberal power relations"--

This book studies young people who are Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET); a prime concern among policymakers. Moving past common interpretations of NEETs as a homogeneous group, it asks why some youth become NEET, whereas other do not. The authors analyse diverse school-to-work patterns of young NEETs in five typical countries and investigate the role of individual characteristics, countries’ institutions and policies, and their complex interplay. Readers will come to understand youth marginalization as a process that may occur during the transition from school, vocational college, or university to work. By studying longitudinal analyses of processes and transitions, readers will gain the crucial insight that NEETs are not equally vulnerable, and that most NEETs will find their way back to the labour market. However, they will also see that in all countries, a group of long-term NEETs exists. These exceptionally vulnerable young people are sidelined from society and the labour market. The country cases and cross-national studies illustrate that policies intended to help long-term NEETs to find their way in society are very limited. The book provides useful theoretical and empirical insights for scholars interested in the school-to-work transition and marginalized youth. It also provides helpful insights in vulnerability to policymakers who aim to combat youth marginalization. Many young people failed by the school system are those who face a range of social and economic challenges due to multiple forms of injustice. This book provides an insight into the educational practices that work to re-engage young people who have become disenchanted with traditional schooling. It examines the lives of students and workers who participate in education sites on the fringes of mainstream education, and includes a rich tapestry of personal experiences from those who have been failed by their schooling experiences. The book draws upon research of international relevance conducted in a range of ‘Flexible Learning Centres’ and ‘democratic schools’ in Australia and the UK; it suggests that improving the retention levels of young people in formal education will require schooling practices to change. Students who have become disengaged from mainstream schooling do re-engage in the learning process of many alternative schools, indicating that teaching practices and forms of organisation which work in alternative sites can also provide lessons for mainstream schooling, thereby encouraging a more socially just education system.
