Anders als andere Philosophen verlieh Schopenhauer bereits früh in seinem Leben seiner Philosophie eine Struktur, an der er bis zu seinem Tod weitgehend festhielt. Diese manifestiert sich in seinem 1818 erschienenen Hauptwerk "Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung", aber auch in den "Vorlesungen über die gesamte Philosophie" sowie anderen Texten, die im Wesentlichen Vorarbeiten oder Ergänzungen zum Hauptwerk darstellen. Aufgrund der Eigentümlichkeit, dass "der Anfang das Ende beinahe so sehr voraussetze, als das Ende den Anfang, und eben so jeder frühere Theil den späteren beinahe so sehr, als dieser jenen", sieht Schopenhauer seinen eigenen Ansatz weniger als System denn als einen Organismus, an dem er zeit seines Lebens gearbeitet hat. Neben einer biographischen Skizze, einer Abhandlung zur Rezeption der Schopenhauer'schen Philosophie sowie bibliographischen Hinweisen bietet Peter Welsen einen systematischen Abriss von Schopenhauers philosophischem Ansatz (Genese und Struktur – Das bessere Bewusstsein – Erkenntnistheorie – Metaphysik der Natur – Metaphysik des Schönen – Metaphysik der Sitten) und einen Überblick über sein Werk. This book provides a detailed reconstruction of the origins of Schopenhauer's philosophy and its inherent aporias. It is divided into four parts. The first section delves into the pietistic upbringing of young Schopenhauer and his introduction to philosophy through the teachings of G.E. Schulze, as well as his study of Plato, Schelling, and Kant. Faced with the "negative" outcomes of Kant's criticism, particularly the unknowability of the thing-in-itself, young Schopenhauer initially engaged with Fichte and Schelling (this is covered in the second part of the volume). However, Schopenhauer formed the opinion that these two philosophers, instead of upholding and expanding upon Kant's ideas, ultimately diverge from them. That notwithstanding, he implicitly inherited certain pivotal concepts from Fichte and Schelling. The third part explores Schopenhauer's initial endeavor to formulate a new metaphysics after Kant, known as the theory of "better consciousness." In the fourth part, the book demonstrates how the internal contradictions within that theory and Schopenhauer's transformative encounter with Indian wisdom (Hinduism and Buddhism) lead him to abandon his first attempt at a system and develop his metaphysics of will. The last and most substantial chapter of the book focuses on the author's analysis of the inherent aporias within Schopenhauer's mature system, approaching them from a genetic perspective.

Auch Arthur Schopenhauer verweist auf den antiken Melancholiediskurs und greift etwa die Nähe des Genies zur Melancholie auf, ohne sich jedoch darüber hinaus umfänglich an ihm zu orientieren. Er verortet Melancholie nicht als Anomalie, sondern als Perspektive des Gemüts auf das Sein. In Schopenhauers Werke in fünf Bänden finden sich im Sachregister acht Verweise auf die Verwendung des Begriffs „Melancholie“ in seinem Gesamtwerk. Diese Textstellen buchstabieren den Terminus nicht immer umfänglich aus, deshalb sollen schwerpunktmäßig die Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit als Grundlage des vorliegenden Textes dienen. Zunächst sei aber auf die Philosophischen Vorlesungen verwiesen, in denen Schopenhauer das melancholische Gefühl konkret beschreibt. Es äußere sich darin: 1) dass man beständig sinne und denke, immer gedankenvoll umhergehe, nie frei (...); 2) dass man immer an Eine Sache denke, und zwar so ausschließlich, dass man andre, oft viel wichtigere Dinge darüber aus den Augen lässt; 3) dass man die Sachen in ungünstigem, finstern Licht sehe. Um Schopenhauers Überlegungen zur Melancholie weiter zu umreißen, fragt der vorliegende Text nach Ursachen und Kausalitäten, die sie bedingen.
