Laws of Transgression offers multiple perspectives on the story of Daniel Paul Schreber (1842–1911), a chamber president of the German Supreme Court who was institutionalized after claiming God had communicated with him, desiring to make him into a woman. Schreber was not only a successful judge, but was also to become the author of one of the most commented upon texts in psychiatric literature, Memoirs of My Nervous Illness. Published in 1903, this remarkable work documented Schreber’s visions, desires, jurisprudence, and theology. Far from ending the judge’s legal investments, it manifested an intensification of engagement with the law in the attempt to prove that becoming a woman did not deprive the judge of legal competence. Schreber’s experience of bodily change and his account of interior life has been the subject of more than a century of psychoanalytic and medical scrutiny. With the contemporary trans turn, interest in the judge’s desire to become a woman has intensified. In Laws of Transgression, Peter Goodrich, Katrin Trüstedt, and contributing authors set out to unfold Schreber’s complex relation to the law. The collection revisits and rediscovers the Memoirs, not only in its juridical and political implications, but as a transgressional text that has challenged law and heteronormativity.

In Ghost Words and Invisible Giants, Lheisa Dustin engages psychoanalytic theory to describe the “language of suffering” of iconic modernist authors H.D. and Djuna Barnes, tracing disconnection, psychic splitting, and virulent thought patterns in creative works that have usually been read as intentionally enigmatic. Dustin imbricates Barnes and H.D.’s sense of tenuous psychic boundaries with others – parent figures, otherworldly and divine beings, and ambivalent or malignant love objects – in their creative brilliance, suggesting that the writers’ works stage – and also help manage – their psychic suffering in language in which signifier (the sound or image of the word) and signified (what it means) are radically disconnected. The cryptic and ineffable styles of these texts thus involve attempts to embody the meanings that cannot be expressed through language. Dustin reads two of H.D.’s later works as examples of language that does not differentiate words, thoughts, and people from one another, and instead tries to include everything in its formulations of meaning. However, H.D., she argues, also seeks an end to this mental proliferation– an end that she associates with the hallucinatory return of difference as such. In contrast, Dustin reads two novels by Barnes as invoking and denying childhood secrets through the use of fetishized words. To supplement her psychoanalytic readings, Dustin considers the authors’ familial and romantic histories and their broader social involvements or noninvolvement (for instance, H.D.’s Occultist practices and psychoanalytic sessions, Barnes’s fascination with spectacle and her later reclusion), rendering a detailed and compelling analysis of the forces at play beneath enigmatic, “difficult” modernist literary works. Read in this light, the spectral and otherworldly figures and strange patterns of expression appearing in H.D.’s and Barnes’s writing, and perhaps much or our writing, signal the traumatic content that it tries to negate.

Schreber was a judge and doctor of law who lived according to a strict set of principles. His nervous illness first manifested itself as hypochondria and insomnia - which he put down to his excessive workload - but gradually deteriorated into pathological delusion. Believing himself to be dead and rotting, Schreber attempted suicide, and then went on to experience bizarre delusional epsiodes whereby he belived he was being turned into a woman. This book claims that Keats’s poetry is a reaction against the discourse of modernity which traumatized the human subject by creating a divide between human and nature, subject and object. It argues that by transcending this divide and acknowledging the agency of both subject and object, Keats makes an ideological statement and offers a new site of existence or relationality to readers. This site also implies a response to the accusations that the Romantics were not interested in the realities of their time. What Keats does is to give an aestheticized response to the hardcore facts of his time. Departing from previous studies due to its emphasis on subjectivity and relationality, the book discusses Keats with regard to post/non-anthropocentric, alternative subject positions and subject-object relations in his “Ode to a Nightingale,” “In drear nighted December,” “Isabella; or, The Pot of Basil,” “Lamia,” “La Belle Dame sans Mercy,” and “Ode on a Grecian Urn.” Drawing on Lacanian and Braidottian epistemologies in its discussion of the intricacy between the imaginary and the symbolic, the irruption of the psychotic into the symbolic, and the agency of the object on the subject in Keats’s poetry, the book suggests that the inner dynamics of both the subject and the object acquire agency, which shatters Oneness and totality assumed in the Cartesian self.
