Im Verlaufe der 1960er und 1970er Jahre haben zahlreiche Schweizerinnen und Schweizer die «Dritte Welt» entdeckt und zum Gegenstand ihres Interesses und ihres politischen Engagements gemacht. Breit verankert sowohl in reformkirchlichen als auch in studentischen Kreisen haben die Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten in den Organisationen der Solidaritätsbewegung gemeinsam auf eine individuelle, soziale und wirtschaftliche Erneuerung hingearbeitet. Im Bewusstsein, dass die «Unterentwicklung» des Südens ihr Gegenstück in der «Überentwicklung» des Nordens hatte, bildete die Herstellung globaler Gerechtigkeit das Ziel dieser Bewegung. Bewusstseinsbildung und Aufklärung der eigenen Gesellschaft durch die Erzeugung von Betroffenheitsgefühlen wurden als Mittel dazu eingesetzt. Anhand der umfangreichen Textproduktion und anhand der Aktionen der Solidaritätsbewegung zeichnet die Autorin eine Diskursgeschichte des deutschschweizerischen Tiersmondismus nach. Den Tiersmondistinnen und Tiersmondisten gelangen damit politische und symbolische Erfolge. Der Arbeitsgruppe Dritte Welt Bern etwa gelang es im Nestlé-Prozess, den weltweit tätigen Konzern in Argumentationsnöte zu bringen und den entwicklungspolitischen Anliegen breite Resonanz zu verschaffen.
