Some say, ‘I cannot believe in God because science has disproved it!’ It is now apparent that such reasoning is invalid. Modern science supports what the Bible teaches, and the Bible supplies what science cannot. This book demonstrates this unity with many facts and examples, showing how conflicts in the past have been resolved and how this is relevant to how we live today.

In Unlikely Allies: Monotheism and the Rise of Science, Mark Worthing investigates the claims of religious traditions that they played a unique role in the rise of the natural sciences. The author argues that monotheism in general, more than any particular manifestation of it, was significant in the development of modern science. Certain key features of monotheism provided fertile conditions for the rise of the natural sciences and Christianity, while not solely responsible for producing these conditions, played a significant role. Given these historical links, the view that religion--especially monotheistic religion--is the natural enemy of science must be rejected. Contrary to popular perception, the natural sciences and belief in one God have been unlikely allies for over two millennia.

Can answers to the biggest questions in life be found? Today there are many who are unsure whether there is a creator God, are uncertain about religion and yet instinctively feel that their life has a purpose and that values such as love, truth, honesty, beauty, logic and kindness are real. This book has been written to help such people make sense of their existence and to indicate the types of evidence available to help people find a strong rational faith. “So many people think faith is a feeling or a flight of fantasy, by contrast Cambridge-educated medical surgeon, Dr Bernard Palmer, makes it clear that there is outstanding evidence at the basis of Christian belief. But he does not stop there, he then not only shows what that evidence means for our lives, he also reveals what the reader should do about it. That is the rhythm of this excellent book: the evidence, its meaning and our action, which makes this a profoundly challenging read that appeals to the mind, the heart and the will.” Rico Tice Christianity Explored “I am both delighted and honoured to recommend Bernard Palmer’s new book to you. There are three reasons for this. First, he himself truly believes the things he is asking you to believe. Second, he writes about profound matters in such a way that it is not only easy to follow but it is winsome and appealing. But thirdly, he is offering us ‘Stepping Stones’ to a new life by introducing us to Jesus Christ with compelling reasons to become a believer. And this is the most important thing of all.” Frank Retief Retired presiding bishop of the Reformed Evangelical Church of Southern Africa

Are you tired of hearing the claims of the new atheists, who say that science has disproved God and that religion is irrational and harmful? Do you wonder how to respond to their arguments and defend your faith in a scientific and reasonable way? Do you want to learn how to integrate your Christian beliefs with your scientific knowledge, and to see how God and science are not enemies, but allies? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this book is for you. In this book, you will discover how to cultivate a biblical vision for science, and how to use science as a tool for knowing and serving God. You will also learn how to answer some of the most common and challenging objections raised by the new atheists, such as: How can you believe in God when there is no evidence for His existence? How can you trust the Bible when it is full of errors and contradictions? How can you reconcile the creation account in Genesis with the theory of evolution? How can you accept miracles when they violate the laws of nature? How can you justify the moral and intellectual evils committed by Christians in the name of God? In this book, you will find clear and concise answers to these and other questions, based on sound logic, solid evidence, and faithful interpretation of Scripture. You will also find practical tips and examples on how to engage in respectful and fruitful dialogue with the new atheists, and how to share the gospel and the truth with them. This book is not only for Christians who want to defend their faith, but also for seekers and skeptics who want to explore the relationship between God and science, and to examine the claims and the evidence for themselves. This book is not meant to attack or ridicule the new atheists, but to challenge and invite them to consider the possibility and the reality of God, who is the Creator and the Lord of all science and all life. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand and appreciate the harmony and the beauty of God and science, and to see how they can enrich and empower each other. “An excellent . . . introduction to the challenges and benefits of reading Genesis 1-11 as a genuinely ancient (specifically ancient Near Eastern) text.” —Iain Provon, author of Seriously Dangerous Religion Origins turns much of what Christians learned in Sunday School on its head in a revealing comparison of the Genesis narrative to the competing pagan narrative of the day. Relatively few Bible readers are familiar with the world of the ancient Near East, centered in Mesopotamia and its most prominent city, Babylon. The culture, literature, religions, geography, etc. of the early biblical period dramatically influenced what was written and why and without an understanding of these elements, the purposes, meanings, and structure of the text are easily misread by modern readers and reduces the primeval narrative to a collection of Sunday School stories. Origins, while acknowledging the agendas of modern readers, remains on track in expounding on the ancient agenda. Paul Copan and Douglas Jacoby address the doubts of those who find stumbling blocks in early Genesis, facing the tough questions head on and providing biblical solution to many of the “problem passages.” Origins surprises and amazes all seekers, new believers, and veterans of Scripture alike as it devastates the polytheistic, pagan assumptions and proclaims the true God. “A fine addition to the ever-increasing library of books concerning Genesis . . . One also hopes that this volume might be leveraged as an apologetics tool to help those looking for theistic viewpoints on Creation.” —Dustin Burlet, Conspectus “This book can be a helpful apologetic and alternative view for those in the church who have only heard a literal approach to Genesis 1-11 and are looking for something different.” —Renew.org

The story of the “conflict thesis” between science and religion—the notion of perennial conflict or warfare between the two—is part of our modern self-understanding. As the story goes, John William Draper (1811–1882) and Andrew Dickson White (1832–1918) constructed dramatic narratives in the nineteenth century that cast religion as the relentless enemy of scientific progress. And yet, despite its resilience in popular culture, historians today have largely debunked the conflict thesis. Unravelling its origins, James Ungureanu argues that Draper and White actually hoped their narratives would preserve religious belief. For them, science was ultimately a scapegoat for a much larger and more important argument dating back to the Protestant Reformation, where one theological tradition was pitted against another—a more progressive, liberal, and diffusive Christianity against a more traditional, conservative, and orthodox Christianity. By the mid-nineteenth century, narratives of conflict between “science and religion” were largely deployed between contending theological schools of thought. However, these narratives were later appropriated by secularists, freethinkers, and atheists as weapons against all religion. By revisiting its origins, development, and popularization, Ungureanu ultimately reveals that the “conflict thesis” was just one of the many unintended consequences of the Protestant Reformation.

Some scientists have religious beliefs we must ourselves be prepared and willing to make a reasoned presentation of our faith, especially to young scientists, who have all too often concluded that a serious faith in a personal God and objective pursuit of scientific truth are incompatible. Professor Francis Collins, Director, National Human Genome Research Institute some do not the beliefs of most popular religions by scientific standards are based on evidence so flimsy that only an act of blind faith can make them acceptable. Dr Francis Crick (co-discoverer of DNA s structure) However, science and belief are both very important for us. Do we have to choose between them? The view that science and belief are in conflict is a major stumbling block for many people today. Michael Poole addresses this issue in Exploring Science and Belief. Is science the ultimate test of what to believe? Do its laws make belief in miracles impossible? Has Darwin s work ruled out the idea of a creating God? How did the universe develop? Was it accidental or planned? What will happen to it eventually? Do we have any significance in it? These are some of the questions addressed in Exploring Science and Belief. Although he start(s) from what is for the theist the conviction, for the agnostic the hypothesis, and for the atheist the delusion that God exists, Michael Poole also dicusses evidence for God s existence.
