Deep Underground Laboratories are multidisciplinary research infrastructures with a rock overburden that goes from a few hundred meters to a few kilometers. Presently, there are 13 laboratories in operation on three Continents (North America, Europe, Asia, Australia) for a global excavation volume of order 10^6 m3. New laboratories are being constructed/proposed including a new one in South America. The main reason to develop an underground infrastructure is related to operate in a less radioactive environment where in particular muons from cosmic rays are strongly suppressed. This low background environment opens the possibility to search for very rare events such as low energy neutrino interactions, dark matter direct detection, and neutrinoless double beta decay. These are crucial studies to enhance our understanding of the Universe. In addition, these special environments in which these infrastructures are located provide opportunities to carry out many and varied studies on geology, geophysics, biology and planetary exploration of significant interest and impact in both pure and applied science. A number of technological challenges over the last decades have been faced by scientists working in these infrastructures. As a consequence, state-of-the-art facilities are in operation in Underground Laboratories for radio-purity assay, ultra-low temperature detectors, quantum computing, radon suppression and mitigation, advanced machining, and next-generation gravitational wave detectors.

Chapters by a distinguished group of international authors on various aspects of Underground Injection Science and Technology are organized into seven sections addressing specific topics of interest. In the first section the chapters focus on the history of deep underground injection as well regulatory issues, future trends and risk analysis. The next section contains ten chapters dealing with well testing and hydrologic modeling. Section 3, consisting of five chapters, addresses various aspects of the chemical processes affecting the fate of the waste in the subsurface environment. Consideration is given here to reactions between the waste and the geologic medium, and reactions that take place within the waste stream itself. The remaining four sections deal with experience relating to injection of, respectively, liquid wastes, liquid radioactive wastes in Russia, slurried solids, and compressed carbon dioxide. Chapters in Section 4, cover a diverse range of other issues concerning the injection of liquid wastes including two that deal with induced seismicity. In Section 5, Russian scientists have contributed several chapters revealing their knowledge and experience of the deep injection disposal of high-level radioactive liquid processing waste. Section 6 consists of five chapters that cover the technology surrounding the injection disposal of waste slurries. Among the materials considered are drilling wastes, bone meal, and biosolids. Finally, four chapters in Section 7 deal with questions relating to carbon dioxide sequestration in deep sedimentary aquifers. This subject is particularly topical as nations grapple with the problem of controlling the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.* Comprehensive coverage of the state of the art in underground injection science and technology* Emerging subsurface waste disposal technologies* International scope

According to the big bang theory, our Universe began in a state of unimaginably high energy and density, contained in a space of subatomic dimensions. At that time, unlike today, the fundamental forces of nature were presumably unified and the particles present were interacting at energies not attainable by present-day accelerators. Underground laboratories provide the conditions to investigate processes involving rare phenomena in matter and to detect the weak effects of highly elusive particles by replicating similar environments to those once harnessed during the earliest states of the Earth. These laboratories now appear to be the gateway to understanding the physics of the grand unification of the forces of nature. Built to shield extremely sensitive detectors from the noise of their surroundings and the signals associated with cosmic rays, underground facilities have been established during the last 30 years at a number of sites worldwide. To date, the United States' efforts to develop such facilities have been modest and consist primarily of small underground laboratories. However, the U.S. underground community has pushed for larger underground facilities on the scale of major laboratories in other countries. An Assessment of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) addresses this matter by evaluating the major physics questions and experiments that could be explored with the proposed DUSEL. Measuring the potential impact, this assessment also examines the broader effects of the DUSEL in regards to education and public outreach, and evaluates the need associated with developing U.S. programs similar to science programs in other regions of the world.
