On February 20, 1963, a team of nineteen Americans embarked on the first expedition that would combine high-altitude climbing with scientific research. The primary objective of the six scientists on the team—who procured funding by appealing to the military and political applications of their work—was to study how severe stress at high altitudes affected human behavior. The expedition would land the first American on the summit of Mount Everest nearly three years after a successful (though widely disputed) Chinese ascent. At the height of the Cold War, this struggle for the Himalaya turned Everest into both a contested political space and a remote, unpredictable laboratory. The US expedition promised to resurrect American heroism, embodied in a show of physical strength and skill that, when combined with scientific expertise, would dominate international rivals on the frontiers of territorial exploration. It propelled mountaineers, scientists, and their test subjects 29,029 feet above sea level, the highest point of Chinese-occupied Tibet. There they faced hostile conditions that challenged and ultimately compromised standard research protocols, yielding results that were too exceptional to be generalized to other environments. With this book, Philip W. Clements offers a nuanced exploration of the impact of extremity on the production of scientific knowledge and the role of masculinity and nationalism in scientific inquiry.

Of those 6,000 students, 40 finalists are chosen and brought to Washington, D.C., for a week of intense science "challenges" in various science disciplines. The challenges are televised on the Discovery Channel, and the winning teams and individuals are presented with science awards and prizes. This book follows some of the students selected for the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge and includes colorful descriptions of how the teams solved the challenges, inspiring profiles of the winners, tips on preparing science projects, and dozens of winning project ideas that kids can use to inspire their own awesome science projects! In this book readers will travel to the outer extremities of experimental science to contemplate the unhallowed arts of re-animation, genetic engineering, galvanism, time travel, mind control, and psychadelic drugs. Center stage are the extreme scientists who challenged everything—nature, morality, the government, the law and sometimes even their own bodies—in pursuit of knowledge. Can you extract a man's soul from his body? Can you transplant a human head from one neck to another? What happens if you take LSD every day for 11 weeks? Can humans converse wtih dolphins? Can we travel through time? At some point, scientists have actively sought the answers to all these questions, but society often asks just one in reply: Just because you can do something, does that mean you should? Extreme Science lifts the dustsheets off the past to explore the lives of people who pushed every possible boundary to get to the truth. Readers might find the content disturbing. However, all these bizarre experiments, and the scientists who performed them, have had a significant impact on the world in which we live. Not only that, but many have helped to shape the world we will be living in tomorrow.
