Popular perception still persists that science and mysticism do not and cannot mix; they belong to two very different worlds. In light of recent developments, particularly in the sciences, the fourteen original papers by international scholars from the East and the West argue that this perception can no longer be sustained. It is becoming more and more evident that the reach of the human mind extends far beyond what can be captured either by the senses or narrow, rigid logic and rationality. Below and beyond the world of science there exists a serene, real world of intuition and insight which is a rich mine of knowledge and wisdom. Recent studies and research show that mystics of all times and all places have had a special access to this world. Today the consensus is gradually emerging that both scientists and mystics share the common mission of being seekers of truth, and their findings are complementary rather than contradictory. This volume also points out that this constructive blending of science and mysticism can serve as an effective catalyst for a meaningful and enriching East-West dialogue.

Fr. Egan surveys the current scholarship on mysticism, giving special attention to the works Carl Albrecht, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Richard Bucke, Teilhard de Chardin, Harvey Cox, William James, William Johnston, Bernard Lonergan, Thomas Merton, Erich Neumann, Karl Rahner, Walter Stace, Evelyn Underhill, R. C. Zaehner, and many lesser-known authors. The book covers a wide spectrum of modern thinking. It presents authors who treat mysticism as a psychological phenomenon involving pathology and altered states of consciousness, as well as others who understand it as stages of life toward union with the God of Love. Fr. Egan also highlights both those authors who have opened up Christian mysticism to the riches of the Eastern tradition and those critical of this Eastern turn. Finally, he explores the theological reflections of Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan for their ability to bring together mystical spirituality and academic theology. These contemporary theologians offer a solid foundation for a new science of mysticism based on the Christian mystical tradition, empirical sciences, East-West dialogue, and contemporary theological pluralism.

"Reincarnation: The Phoenix Fire Mystery is an anthology that brings together minds of the most diverse characters, tastes, and intellectual pursuits, and is sure to appeal to: seekers of a basic education into the meaning of reincarnation: what is human beings is supposed to be reborn and why it returns; why people in general do not remember past lives; how that memory can be regained; what happens after death; why human beings cannot incarnate as animals; the significance of the rebirth of the solar system; the evolution of the Great Teachers of humanity through reincarnation...scientifically minded people who tend to dismiss all theories of immortality as products of wishful thinking. The articles presented examine the extensive research into reincarnation conducted by esteemed scientists and reported in scholarly books and scientific journals...the growing number of individuals interested in Oriental religions and philosophies. Selections in this volume prove, however, that reincarnation is not peculiarly an Eastern idea, but has numerous representatives in every era of Western thought from Pythagoras and Plato onward...people who have rejected the possibility of reincarnation because 'no one has ever come back to tell us.' Personal stories and case histories of individuals who from all accounts 'have come back to tell us' are recounted in great detail...persons of Western religious background desirous of returning to the original inspiration of their Great Teachers and Prophets. Quotations are included from the Bible and other religious works that speak of reincarnation; church writings explore the hidden facts of how this ancient tenet--taught by some of the greatest of the Church Fathers--became divorced from Christian teachings...students of history and early cultures. Through myths and historical writings this volume illustrates the universal prevalence in antiquity of a belief in many lives, which led Jung to remark that reincarnation is 'an affirmation that must be counted as among the primordial affirmations of mankind'...lovers of fine literature. The thoughts of classical and popular authors on reincarnation are generously represented...searching minds reaching out for fresh, maturer answers to life's perplexing problems and mysteries. The chapter 'New Horizons in Science, Psychology, and Philosophy' offers responses from the world's most important thinkers...teachers, aware of the keen interest of students in reincarnation, but discouraged by the dearth of reliable material. This thoroughly documented work is an ideal text in courses of comparative religion, philosophy, and parapsychology."--front and back flaps.

• Explores how esoteric teachings from India and Tibet offer specific methods for tuning and directing consciousness to reach higher stages of awareness • Presents a wide-ranging collection of practical techniques, as well as numerous figures and diagrams, to facilitate navigation of altered states of consciousness and heightened mystical states • Develops an integrated structural map of higher consciousness by viewing Tibetan and Indian Tantra through the work of Steiner, Gurdjieff, Teilhard de Chardin, Aurobindo Ghose, and quantum physicists Planck and Bohm Throughout the millennia shamans, saints, and yogis have discovered how the brain-mind can be reprogrammed to become a powerful instrument facilitating access to higher states of consciousness. In particular, the written Tantric texts of India and Tibet describe, in extraordinarily precise detail, interior transformations of conscious energy along with numerous techniques for stimulating, modulating, and transforming consciousness to reach increasingly higher states and stages of awareness. In this in-depth examination of esoteric Tantric practices, Shelli Renée Joye, Ph.D., presents a wide-ranging collection of psychophysical techniques integrating Tibetan Vajrayana and Patañjali’s yoga to induce altered states of consciousness for the exploration of heightened mystical states. Sharing numerous figures and diagrams, she shows how these theories and techniques are not only fully supported by modern biophysics, brain science, and quantum physics but are also in line with the work of Rudolf Steiner, G. I. Gurdjie , Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Aurobindo Ghose, Max Planck, and David Bohm. e author also shares insights from her own personal practices for consciousness exploration, which include prayer, mantra, emptying the mind, psychedelics, yoga, and visualization of interior physiology. Offering a structural map of the dynamics of consciousness, Joye reveals that one can develop new ways of tuning and directing consciousness to reach extraordinary modes of being and intense levels of lucid awareness, the requisites for the direct exploration of supersensible dimensions and sailing in the ocean of consciousness.

Beauty And Holiness written by James Alfred Martin, Jr. and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-14 with Philosophy categories.

In this broad historical and critical overview based on a lifetime of scholarship, James Alfred Martin, Jr., examines the development of the concepts of beauty and holiness as employed in theories of aesthetics and of religion. The injunction in the Book of Psalms to "worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" addressed a tradition that has comprehended holiness primarily in terms of ethical righteousness--a conception that has strongly influenced Western understandings of religion. As the author points out, however, the Greek forbears of Western thought, as well as many Eastern traditions, were and are more broadly concerned with the pursuit of beauty, truth, and goodness as ideals of human excellence, that is, with the "holiness of beauty." In this work Martin describes a philosophical stance that should prove to be most productive for the dialogue between aesthetics and religion. Beginning with the treatment of beauty and holiness in Hebrew, Greek, and classical Christian thought, the author traces the emergence of modern theories of aesthetics and religion in the Enlightenment. He then outlines the role of aesthetics in the theories of religion proposed by Otto, Eliade, van der Leeuw, and Tillich, in the cultural anthropology of Geertz, and in the thought of Santayana, Dewey, Whitehead, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. In a global context Martin explores the relation of aesthetic theory to religious thought in the traditions of India, China, and Japan and concludes with reflections on the viability of modern aesthetic and religious theory in the light of contemporary cultural and methodological pluralism. Eastern Influences On Western Philosophy written by Macfie A. L. Macfie and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-05 with PHILOSOPHY categories.

The influence of East on West - of Eastern ideas on Western thought - has become an increasingly vexed issue in recent times. Opinion is divided between two main schools: those who believe that Oriental ideas have exercised a considerable influence on Western thought, and those who, for a variety of reasons, believe that such influence has remained negligible. In this Reader A. L. Macfie suggests that the reality lies somewhere between these two extremes, and that the interest taken by Western thinkers in Eastern thought in the modern period has moved from one of passing interest, through serious attention, to some level of assimilation and acceptance.Eastern Influences on Western Philosophy explores the extent of Oriental influence on European thought, primarily in the period of the Enlightenment and the nineteenth-century period of doubt and scepticism that followed it. As such it is the first Reader to bring together in one place a series of specific historical and textual studies of Oriental influence upon European thinkers. Starting with Malebranche and ending with Heidegger, other Western thinkers considered include Leibniz, Voltaire, Hume, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Emerson, Thoreau, Nietzsche, Jung and Buber. To accompany the readings the editor's introduction explores the idea of influence in the context of the chosen readings, and at the same time raises the question of how far Edwards Said's thesis regarding Orientalism actually applies to Western thought.Key Features:* Reflects increasing interest in relationship between Eastern and Western Philosophy* Covers major European figures from the 18th and 19th centuries and the way Eastern thought influenced them* Substantial editorial introduction places readings in context and explores the influence of the East on the West* Previous work by editor praised for its accessibility
