One of the key tasks every researcher must perform is publishing their work, and most of this publication will occur in peer-reviewed journals. These publications are essential for promotion, recognition, and creating a dialogue with your colleagues around the world. Unfortunately, writing publication-quality manuscripts and guiding them through the peer-review process is a difficult, time-consuming, and often frustrating task. In this book, I'll teach you how to make the process easier based on what I've learned from more than 25 years of helping authors publish more than 6000 papers in some of the world's most prestigious journals (including Nature, Science, and PNAS). Writing for Science Journals explains the details of every section of a journal manuscript, including tips and tricks you won't find elsewhere about how to deal with the peculiar ways that journals work with authors and reviewers. I'll also deal with some of the implications of statistics and experimental design that you may have learned in school, but possibly not in an integrated form that guides you through the steps necessary to perform publishable research. In each chapter, I'll provide a list of key points that you can use as the basis for developing a learning plan. I've also provided links to relevant online resources via a Links page that is available only to purchasers of the book, and an errata and additions page (see below) that will provide a forum for expanding on the book until the 2nd edition is available.

Modern information and communication technologies, together with a cultural upheaval within the research community, have profoundly changed research in nearly every aspect. Ranging from sharing and discussing ideas in social networks for scientists to new collaborative environments and novel publication formats, knowledge creation and dissemination as we know it is experiencing a vigorous shift towards increased transparency, collaboration and accessibility. Many assume that research workflows will change more in the next 20 years than they have in the last 200. This book provides researchers, decision makers, and other scientific stakeholders with a snapshot of the basics, the tools, and the underlying visions that drive the current scientific (r)evolution, often called ‘Open Science.’

Most scientists live in a "publish or perish" environment, but few would describe themselves as brilliant (or enthusiastic) writers. Coming to the aid of all those wishing to improve the quality of their scientific writing -- established researchers and aspiring students alike -- three experienced authors/scientists from differing backgrounds and cultures have compiled this classic guide. This new edition has been completely revised to reflect dramatic changes in communication over the past 15 years. The primary emphasis is on writing techniques, accurate expression, adherence to accepted standards, and above all clarity, but the authors also venture into communication technology and organizational as well as ethical aspects of science. Numerous appendices and a particularly comprehensive index complete this highly useful book. "The authors have a passion, not only for clarity and economy of style, but also for precision and consistency." (Nature) "A wealth of information contained in a single book of manageable proportions. Students reporting on a simple laboratory experiment and their teachers preparing a paper or lecture will both find this book a constant companion." (European Science Editing) "The book under review claims, 'we know of no book as broad in its coverage, as critical in its analysis of existing trends, and as international in its scope'. This claim is immodest but accurate." (Trends in Pharmacological Sciences)

This book completes a scientific life trilogy of books following on from the Hows (i.e. skills) and the Whys is now the Whats of a scientific life. Starting with just what is science, then on to what is physics, what is chemistry and what is biology the book discusses career situations in terms of types of obstacles faced. There follow examples of what science has achieved as well as plans and opportunities. The contexts for science are dependencies of science on mathematics, how science cuts across disciplines, and the importance of engineering and computer software. What science is as a process is that it is distinctly successful in avoiding or dealing with failures. Most recently a radical change in what is science is the merger of the International Council of Scientific Unions and the International Social Sciences Council. Key Features: Dissects what is science and its contexts Provides wide ranging case studies of science and discovery based directly on the author’s many decades in science The author has outstanding experience in mentoring and career development, and also in outreach activities for the public and students of all ages The world of science today involves a merger of ‘the sciences’ and the ‘social sciences’
