This book looks at the first ten years of the African Union. This is the second in a series of books that will be produced each year from annual conferences held on the multi-faceted issue of African liberation. The key themes of the book explore ways of improving the effectiveness of the African Union, fostering unity amongst African countries through entrenchment of pan-Africanism, and building ownership of the African Union by the African people and their communities. In addition, the thoughts of key figures of pan-Africanism and black emancipation, such as Sylvester Williams and Franz Fanon, are re-positioned to even greater contemporary relevance. Through its promotion of Ethiopianism, pan-Africanism and the African renaissance, we trust that this book will add new interest and a fresh perspective to how Africans move forward together into a post-colonial era where policies and actions are determined by the united agency of liberated Africans the world over.

Belonging to the realm of intelligent technologies, it is increasingly accepted that artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved from being merely a development standpoint in computer science. Indeed, recent reports and academic publications show that we are clearly on the path toward pervasive AI in both business and society. Organizations must adopt AI to maintain a competitive advantage and explore opportunities for unprecedented innovation. This book focuses on understanding the wide range of opportunities as well as the spectrum of challenges AI brings in different business contexts and society at large. The book highlights novel and high-quality research in data science and business analytics and examines the current and future impact of AI in business and society. The authors bridge the gap between business and technical perspectives and demonstrate the potential (and actual) impact on society. Embracing applied, qualitative, and quantitative research as well as field experiments and data analysis, the book covers a broad range of topics including but not limited to human-centered AI, product and process innovation, corporate governance, AI and ethics, organizational performance, and entrepreneurship. This comprehensive book will be a valuable resource for researchers, academics, and postgraduate students across AI, technology and innovation management, and a wide range of business disciplines.

The year 2022 marks the 100th birth anniversary of Kathleen Hylda Valerie Booth, who wrote the first assembly language and designed the assembler and auto code for the first computer systems at Birkbeck College, University of London. She helped design three different machines including the ARC (Automatic Relay Calculator), SEC (Simple Electronic Computer), and APE(X). School of Computer Science and Engineering, under the aegis of Lovely Professional University, pays homage to this great programmer of all times by hosting “BOOTH100”—6th International Conference on Computing Sciences.

Biometrics refers to the authentication techniques that depend on measurable physical characteristics and behavioural characteristics to identify an individual. The biometric systems consist of different stages such as image acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction and matching. Biometric techniques are widely used in the security world. The various types of biometric systems use different techniques for the preprocessing, feature extraction and classifiers. The dorsum of the hand is known as the finger back surface. It is highly used for personal authentication and has not yet attracted the attention of convenient researchers. It is mostly used due to contact free image acquisition. It is reported that the skin pattern on the finger-knuckle is extremely rich in texture due to skin folds and creases, and hence, can be considered as a biometric identifier. Furthermore, advantages of using Finger Knuckle Print (FKP) include rich in texture features, easily accessible, contact-less image acquisition, invariant to emotions and other behavioral aspects such as tiredness, stable features and acceptability in the society. As a result of that, there is less known use of finger knuckle pattern in commercial or civilian applications. The local features of an enhanced palmprint image are extracted using Fast Discrete Orthonormal Stockwell Transform (FDOST). The Fourier transform of an image is obtained by increasing the scale of FDOST to infinity. The Fourier transform coefficients extracted from the palmprint image and FKP image are considered as the global information. The local and global information are physically linked by means of the framework of time frequency analysis. The global feature is exploited to refine the arrangement of FKP images in matching. The proposed schemes make use of the local and global features to verify finger knuckle-print images. The weighted average of the local and global matching distances is taken as the final matching distance of two FKP images. The investigational results indicate that the proposed works outperform the existing works.

Materials are the foundation of technology. As such, most universities provide engineering undergraduates with the fundamental concepts of materials science, including crystal structures, imperfections, phase diagrams, materials processing, and materials properties. Few, however, offer the practical, applications-oriented background that their stud
