This conference was organised by the Third World Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency. For the 250 female scientist participants from distant lands and diverse cultures from the Caribbean to the Far East, the conference proved a stimulating experience to recognize their strength in terms of numbers and achievements, to forge new links, nationally and internationally, and to demonstrate that science is independent of gender and is no longer an exclusively male-dominated preserve. The first part of the proceedings deals with the global, Third World and national perspectives of the theme “Women and Science” and the second highlights the scientific contributions by Third World women scientists, their personal experiences and scientific reports. The publication of these proceedings would serve as a potentially effective strategy aimed at enhancing the status of women scientists, not only in the Third World but worldwide.

This critique by women of male-generated and male-dominated technologies grows out of a consciousness of women as essential, yet unsalaried, participants in production processes. The authors document the ways in which women suffer from technological development in industrialized and developing countries and assess how technological developments perpetuate inequalities between nations, regions, classes, and sexes. They discuss the implementation of modern technology in agriculture and its effects on rural women, look at the position of women in the basic and applied sciences and in science policymaking, and analyze the place of women in selected technology-based industries.

This book provides a roadmap for those embarking on a career in STEM, whether in the research or industry realms. Focusing on paths taken by women, the contributors lend their stories, tips and tricks, and hardships they faced entering into fields historically dominated by men. The authors provide practical advice, highlighting soft skills that are not often taught as modules in the classroom. Topics include research collaborations, performance enhancement, the gender lens in research design and development, imposter syndrome felt by many women in science, ethics in science, scaling feminine leadership, being an influencer as a science leader, and time and resources optimization for career advancement in science from resource-poor settings. Others interested in science and its impacts on society will also find the book informative and timely. As an important part of the Organization for Women in Science in the Developing World (OWSD), University of Port Harcourt Branch Book project, the work hopes to inspire women and men, girls and boys to enter and apply themselves to secure the future in STEM.
