This book is based on an in-depth filmed conversation between Howard Burton and Michael Gordin, Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Princeton University. This thought-provoking, extensive conversation examines the strange case of Immanuel Velikovsky, author of the bestselling book “Worlds in Collision” that managed to provocatively combine unbridled scientific speculation with ancient myth, as a way of probing the often-problematic boundary between science and pseudoscience. By all accounts, Velikovsky was a decidedly curious character. The notorious Russian-born doctor-turned psychoanalyst-turned astronomer-historian-autodidact not only had a flair for writing and boatloads of charisma and energy, he also was on record for making a couple of concrete predictions of his radical new theory of the solar system that turned out, much to the dismay of the authorities of the day, to actually be correct. This carefully-edited book includes an introduction, Harnessing the Fringe, and questions for discussion at the end of each chapter: I. A Counterculture Hero - Introducing Immanuel Velikovsky II. An Ideal Case - The historical allure of Velikovsky III. The Lysenko Lesson - Science meets politics IV. A Freudian Cosmology - Validation by hostility V. Enter Einstein - Velikovsky makes predictions VI. Responses and Reactions - Publicity and hostility VII. Digging In - Unorthodox, up to a point VIII. Science vs. Pseudoscience - In search of a bright line IX. Fringe Benefits - Seeking a balance X. Learning From History - Towards better science? XI. Anthropic Digression - Falsifiability today XII. Better Science? - Educated by history About Ideas Roadshow Conversations: Presented in an accessible, conversational format, Ideas Roadshow books not only explore frontline academic research but also reveal the inspirations and personal journeys behind the research.

Science Makes The World Go Round written by Michael Böcher and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-17 with Science categories.
Researchers in the environmental sciences are often frustrated because actors involved with practice do not follow their advice. This is the starting point of this book, which describes a new model for scientific knowledge transfer called RIU, for Research, Integration and Utilization. This model sees the factors needed for knowledge transfer as being state-of-the-art research and the effective, practical utilization to which it leads, and it highlights the importance of “integration”, which in this context means the active bi‐directional selection of those research results that are relevant for practice. In addition, the model underscores the importance of special allies who are powerful actors that support the application of scientific research results in society. An important product of this approach is a checklist of factors for successful knowledge transfer that will be useful for scientists. By using this checklist, research projects and research programs can be optimised with regard to their potential for reaching successful knowledge transfer effects.

This book offers a panoramic view of science through the perspective of Istvan Hargittai, an internationally renowned Hungarian researcher and educator in physical chemistry. He has had worldwide collaboration in molecular science, symmetry studies, and science history bridging East and West during these experiences. He has talked with hundreds of luminaries of science and mathematics, in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, pharmacology, and materials science, among them one hundred Nobel laureates, but here, Hargittai himself was the interviewee in 23 conversations. They have appeared in the print media, radio, and television in diverse international forums. These conversations cut across political systems and geographical areas and reflect his scientific experience in European countries, the United States, and Russia spanning over 4 decades, and his life experiences over 8 decades. His scientific and writing output has included numerous books in structural chemistry, symmetry, the American and Soviet nuclear projects, James D Watson, Edward Teller, emigration, candid conversations with famous scientists, 4 great cities of science, the culture, art, and nature of scientific discovery, the traits of scientific discoverers, and the Nobel Prize. Some of the greatest scientists of our time wrote forewords to his books and commented on his writings and other achievements. Reviews of his books have appeared in Nature, Scientific American, Physics Today, Chemistry and Industry, Lancet, The Mathematical Intelligencer, and elsewhere. This volume dips into all these aspects of a scientific life and career and offers education through entertainment for a broadest possible readership interested in what science is and what and how it does.

Culture S Engine written by William Gosling and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-17 with Social Science categories.
Culture’s Engine offers an insightful and penetrating analysis of the enduring relationship between technology and society. William Gosling explores in absorbing historical detail how humans have experienced change through a sequence of technological revolutions, each giving rise to new social organisation, which in turn influences the shape and timing of the next such revolution. Gosling argues that it is through this dialogue that successful technology sets the direction and pace of all cultural evolution. The state of technology at any time is the major influence on the world, and not just the material world. This book then is not a history of technology, still less of science. It fundamentally questions how technology and social forces interact, leading to these successive revolutions and their outcomes.

New to this edition are significant updates on: Debates about the limits of democracy, and the developing Chinese political alternative. Political, economic, and social implications of the Covid pandemic. Assessment of the Donald Trump presidency. Political, economic, and social implications of the movement from the Trump presidency to the Biden presidency. Implications of the multitrillion-dollar budget deficits the US government has been running. The emergence of populist movements throughout the world. The Chinese political and economic challenge to the United States. Recent developments in evolution theory. Examples, data, recommended readings, and Internet questions. Critical thinking questions.
