This book reexamines what we often take for granted: how Scripture is presented to worshipers; how it is heard, especially by those with little experience of the life of the church; Scripture’s role in mediating the great narratives of incarnation and redemption at the high points of the year; where Scripture meets people in ritual transition; how the Bible itself provides the language of much public prayer. Contributors also consider how the relationship between Scripture and liturgy is tested by new priorities—the climate crisis, the inclusion and protection of children, the recognition and honoring of those who find themselves on the margins of the church, and the significance of gender and identity in all areas of the church’s life. This book does not offer definitive statements. It is an invitation to a wide audience to engage in new conversations with their practice of worship.

For decades, Gail Ramshaw has lent her liturgical and theological creativity to the church's life in worship. Her past-presidency of the North American Academy of Liturgy is a signal of her gravitas in the academy, not to mention the more than two dozen books she has produced. For the churches--and not only her own Evangelical Lutheran Church in America--she has, internationally and ecumenically, and in part through active involvement in the World Council of Churches (WCC), had her work included in the ritual books of many traditions around the world. Here, in a fitting recognition of a life of scholarship and reflection, is an esteemed collection of writing by liturgical and homiletical scholars honoring and engaging with Gail Ramshaw's work and extending it further to new questions, contexts, and concerns. The volume is organized around the key themes of Ramshaw's work: lectionary patterns, prayer forms, and theological horizons.

Christian churches in recent decades have taken some steps in their practices of liturgy and worship toward acknowledging the graced dignity of human variety. But who is still excluded? What pernicious norms still govern below the surface, and how might they be revealed? How do texts, gestures, and space abet and enforce such norms? How might Christian assemblies gather multiple expressions of human difference to propose through Christian liturgy patterns of graced interaction in the world around them? Liturgy with a Difference gathers a broad range of international theologians and scholars to interrogate current practices of liturgy and worship in order to unmask ways in which dehumanizing majoritarianisms and presumed norms of gender, culture, ethnicity, and body, among others, remain at work in congregations. Together, the chapters in this collection call for a liturgical practice that recognizes and rehearses the vivid richness of God’s image found in the human community and glimpsed, if only for a moment, in liturgical celebration. They point a way beyond mere inclusion toward a generous embrace of the many differences that make up the Christian community. With contributions from Rachel Mann, Teresa Berger, Susannah Cornwall, Miguel A. DeLa Torre, Edward Foley, W. Scott Haldeman, Michael Jagessar, Bruce T. Morrill, Kristine Suna-Koro and Frank Senn. Foreword by Ann Loades.

Contributions to to this volume continue this year's reflections on the sixtieth anniversary of Sacrosanctum concilium. A recent trip home to Tennessee in the US highlighted for me the unusual moment we are occupy. When I grew up there in the 1970s and 1980s, many newly constructed churches reflected the signs of those times: contemporary architecture, fan-shaped seating, and a commitment to liturgy that reflected the culture we inhabited-for better and for worse! (I have always been a fan of a good guitar folk Mass though not of homemade felt banners.) Among those newish churches was Sacred Heart Cathedral in Knoxville, Tennessee, where I was baptised in 1973. It was admittedly not the finest example of mid-century attempts at churches, adorned by an unfortunate twenty-foot-tall painting (by a parishioner) of Jesus on the back wall, descending as if from the clouds. But in many respects, it reflected the community that built it, a small suburban Roman Catholic minority deep in the US Bible Belt. Fast forward to this third decade of the twenty-first century and an entirely different church sits on the same site. Rather than echoing the tentative footsteps of 1960s US Catholic modern architecture, it suggests instead the massive footprint of a Neoclassical European cathedral. Coming in at a cool US$58 million to construct, it dominates its neighborhood, dwarfing the Catholic school on campus and nearly consuming its predecessor-now the parish hall it was probably meant to be in the first place. The parish administrator noted that its grandeur has become the site of weekly 'destination weddings'. (Have a look: shcathedral.org.) It fairly screams 'Roman Catholic' in a place where Southern Baptist and other forms of Protestant evangelicalism remain the majority Christian expression. It does not, however, even whisper 'East Tennessee', whether in the famous marble and granite the state is known for or in reflections of our beloved Smoky Mountains. Nor is there reference to the Cherokee First Nation whose members still live in those mountains or space for the settler arts of Appalachia, whether music or textiles. The church is an import through and through, meant to signal a uniquely Catholic way of being, one quite different from the world around it.
