Scorpions have fascinated humans for a long time, first and foremost because of the harm the sting of a few species could cause but also due to their unique natural history and for the many biologically active compounds found in their venoms. This volume of the Toxinology handbook series covers all those aspects. The subjects are divided into seven sections starting with an introduction to the general aspects of scorpion biology and ecology, followed by the description of the “envenomation” pathophysiology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of venoms and their complex interactions with the immune system. The future of anti-scorpion venom therapy is then covered in two chapters dedicated to alternatives to the century-old techniques currently used to produce “anti-venoms”. The next section presents a world tour of “scorpionism” and dangerous scorpion species and their impact on human health. It is worth remembering that envenomation due to scorpion stings is a substantial health hazard in Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and Latin American countries, with over one million people stung by scorpions every year, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths. Species-centered overviews of “scorpion venoms” are presented in the next section, after which a section details the two main types of “scorpion toxins”. The last section covers high-throughput transcriptome and proteome screenings now known as “venomics”. This volume provides chapters that are accessible to a broad audience, yet also contains the depth of knowledge and detail which makes it of interest to experts in the field. Readers of this reference work will leave well informed on the current state of the art of scorpion venom research.

The activity of producing and raising scorpions for various reasons is called scorpion farming, scorpion ranching, or scorpion horticulture. Although it can appear strange, there are really quite a few good reasons why people raise scorpions: - Researchers are interested in the medicinal properties of the venom that scorpions produce because it comprises a variety of proteins and peptides. The characteristics and possible medicinal uses of scorpion venom are the subject of much research. Current areas of interest include cancer and neurological illnesses. - A source of venom for making anti-venom is scorpion farming, which is possible in some parts of the world where poisonous scorpion species are native. This is especially important in regions where scorpion stings are frequently treated as a medical emergency. - Biology: Scorpions are fascinating research topics because of their unusual biology. Breeding and studying scorpions can help scientists learn more about their genes, physiology, and behavior. - Trade in pets: scorpions are kept by some as exotic pets. The demand for scorpions as pets can be met by farming. Nevertheless, it is crucial to think about the legal and ethical implications, in addition to the animals' welfare, before considering keeping scorpions as pets. - In traditional medicine, scorpion venom or extracts are utilized because of the belief that they possess therapeutic characteristics in certain cultures. One possible solution to the demand for these traditional treatments could be to start growing scorpions. Responsible and ethical scorpion farming is essential, as is following all applicable local, national, and international laws and standards, as well as thinking about the creatures' well-being. Furthermore, some scorpion species may be protected because of conservation issues, and not all of them are good candidates for farming. Putting the animals' needs first and advocating for sustainable and ethical techniques are cornerstones of animal husbandry and breeding.

Scorpion written by Louise M. Pryke and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-15 with Nature categories.

No creature has quite the sting in our mythology and folklore as the scorpion. From the dawn of human civilization they have been a dangerous figure in our imaginations—poisonous, precise, and deadly quiet—but as Louise M. Pryke shows in this book, their bad reputation has overshadowed many exceptional qualities. Scurrying across hundreds of millions of years and across every continent except Antarctica, this book gives the scorpion its due as one of nature’s longest lasting survivors. Indeed scorpions are older than dinosaurs. An ancient arthropod, their form—notable for its pair of pincers and an elegant tail that holds a menacing stinger high in the air in a permanent striking position—hasn’t changed since prehistoric times, though today there are some 1700 different species. Throughout our existence scorpions have served as a powerful cultural and religious symbol—sometimes dangerous, sometimes protecting—from the Egyptian goddess Serket to Zodiac astrology to folk medicine. A fascinating tour that takes us from the art of North Africa to the American Civil War to the markets of Beijing, Scorpion is an homage to one of earth’s oldest residents.

Scorpions Of Medical Importance written by Hugh L. Keegan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1980 with Antivenins categories.

This publication is an account of the distribution, morphology, biology and classification of those scorpions considered to be of medical importance. The book also contains information on the clinical aspects of scorpion envenomation, and on methods for scorpion control.Though the scope of this book is clearly delineated by its title, Scorpions of Medical Importance, Professor Keegan does consider those genera and species of scorpions that are not of medical importance, but commonly occur in association with man, and are often greatly feared. He has done so because of the scorpion's potential as a stimulus for entomophobia. While this fear, created in part by folklore, dramatic but inaccurate literature, and television and motion picture sequences, is useful in areas where dangerously venomous scorpions exist, it has also created much needless apprehension. It will surely be a revelation to many readers that of approximately 800 species that have been described, only about 50 have been reported as being dangerous to man.A valuable feature of Scorpions of Medical Importance is the outstanding drawings that have been used to illustrate the species. It is not often that one comes across drawings so striking in their precision and attention to even the most minute details. As one of the very few books dealing solely with the general subject of scorpions of medical importance, this publication should be a useful reference for all of those interested in the distribution, biology, and control of dangerously venomous scorpions, and in clinical aspects of scorpion envenomation. The book also contains an index, bibliography, and pertinent references to related species not discussed in the book.
