Excerpt from Scottish Heroines of the Faith: Being Brief Sketches of Noble Women of the Reformation and Covenant Times His little book consists Of a series Of articles which were first contributed to the pages Of the Protestant Woman and afterwards appeared in the Free Presbyterian Magazine. The book makes not the slightest pretence to original historical research. The ordinary sources Of Reformation and Covenant ing history were used to yield material, but more especially Anderson's Ladies of t/ze Covenant. The aim Of the writer has been to keep green the memory Of a noble band of women who, moved with a heroism born Of heaven, chose rather to suffer affliction with the people Of God, than to enjoy the pleasures Of sin for a season, esteeming the reproach Of Christ greater riches than the treasures Of Scotland, for they had respect unto the recompence Of the reward. They played their part nobly, and the very fact Of being brought into communion with a people who loved their lives not unto the death, is an inspiration not to be lightly esteemed. As one reads about them and realizes in a measure what they suffered for their love and fidelity to the truth as it is in Jesus, the words Of Augustine rise before the mind when, confronted by the commanding figure Of the Apostle Paul, he says, Behold here a soldier Of the heavenly c& not the. Women of Faith is a book about women who have deepened the faith of others. The contributors -members and colleagues of the Woman's Guild of the Church of Scotland - tell of neighbours, friends, missionaries, deaconesses, and many others, whose lives have had an influence upon them. Not only contemporary women, but women of the past, are remembered for their lives of service in these concise snapshots - Dr Elsie Inglis, for example, the 'ardent suffragist'; Annie Hunter Small, a pioneer of the training of missionaries; Mary Slessor, the dedicated missionary of Calabar; and Saint Margaret, the 11th century Queen of Scotland. The article on Catherine Charteris (founder of the Woman's Guild) and the enterprising Mary Lamond were contributed by Mamie Magnusson.

To reach a spiritual union of body and soul in close proximity to a benign God has often tempted the devout heroes and heroines of Scottish fiction to evade the responsibilities of the day-job. Some protagonists would become victims of Calvinist extremism and eliminate their own 'infidel' siblings. The fictional drama of competing world religions has started in 19th-century Scotland and seems to have reached by now a superficial state of harmony through multicultural coexistence in the Lowlands. Throughout our literary quest we will try and pay tribute to all the major faith groups on Celtic soil who have contributed to the deeply reflective texture of imaginative tartan verse and prose.

The essays contained in this volume examine the particular religious experiences of women within a remarkably vibrant and formative era in British religious history. Scholars from the disciplines of history, literary studies and theology assess women's contributions to renewal, change and reform; and consider the ways in which women negotiated institutional and intellectual boundaries. The focus on women's various religious roles and responses helps us to understand better a world of religious commitment which was not separate from, but also not exclusively shaped by, the political, intellectual and ecclesiastical disputes of a clerical elite. As well as deepening our understanding of both popular and elite religious cultures in this period, and the links between them, the volume re-focuses scholarly approaches to the history of gender and especially the history of feminism by setting the British writers often characterised as 'early feminists' firmly in their theological and spiritual traditions.
