Scottish Revival - This book is a combination of three of the Author's earlier titles, Great Scot, Pentecost 1830, and A Man Approved Of God. - In late 1829 in the West Coast of Scotland a unique revival started. A Scottish pastor, Edward Irving, had been preaching on the Holy Spirit and he did not expect a full blown Pentecostal revival. The revival spread to Irving's Scottish church in London and many people attended. As things grew to be more widespread Irving literally worked himself to death, caught pneumonia and died at the age of 42. His followers started the Catholic Apostolic Church which became heavily involved in liturgy. The denomination now exists only in Australia. This book studies the movement and the teachings of Edward Irving, a Reformed theologian, of unusual breadth.

Many today may be discouraged by the condition of Christianity in Scotland, while unaware of its powerful legacy. Following on from Glory in the Glen and Land of Many Revivals, Scotland Ablaze continues Tom Lennie's compelling historical series on Scottish revival movements. Lennie here focuses on the inspiring period from1858-79 in which much of Scotland was spiritually awakened, affecting every Scottish county. In three parts, Lennie guides us meticulously through the origins of the 1859-61 revival and each area affected, then goes on to chronicle a series of little-known revival after-waves that continued through the 1860s and early '70s, and finally the remarkable evangelistic campaign of Moody and Sankey, in which many have discerned the holy breath of authentic revival. Through this deeply encouraging and fascinating read, may we not only see the power and impact of God's work in our history, but may we excitedly anticipate His miraculous work in our future.

Explores the revival and impact of evangelicalism within the Church of Scotland after the Disruption of 1843 The Revival of Evangelicalism presents a critical analysis of the evangelical movement in the national Church. It emphasises the manner in which the movement both continued along certain pre-Disruption lines and evolved to represent a broader spectrum of Reformed Presbyterian doctrine and piety during the long reign of Queen Victoria. The author interweaves biographical case studies of influential figures who played key roles in the process of revival and recovery, including William Muir, Norman MacLeod and A. H. Charteris. Based on a diverse range of primary sources, the book places the chronological development of 'established evangelicalism' within the broader context of British imperialism, German biblical criticism, European Romanticism and Victorian print culture. Andrew Michael Jones is Visiting Assistant Professor of European and World History at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
