Mockingbird Passing written by Holly Blackford and has been published by Univ. of Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

Blackford finds the basis of Mockingbird's broad appeal in its ability to embody the mainstream culture of romantics like Emerson and social reform writers like Stowe, even as alternative canons---southern gothic, deadpan humor, queer literatures, regional women's novels---lurk in its subtexts. Central to her argument is the notion of "passing": establishing an identity that conceals the inner self so that one can function within a closed social order. For example, the novel's narrator, Scout, must suppress her natural tomboyishness to become a "lady." Meanwhile, Scout's father, Atticus Finch, must contend with competing demands of thoughtfulness, self-reliance, and masculinity that ultimately stunt his effectiveness within an unjust society. Blackford charts the identity dilemmas of other key characters---the mysterious Boo Radley, the young outsider Dill (modeled on Lee's lifelong friend Truman Capote), the oppressed victim Tom Robinson---in similarly intriguing ways.

Scouting in Hong Kong, 1910-2010: Citizenship training in colonial and Chinese contexts, originally issued in 2011 as a hardcover book when the Hong Kong youth movement celebrated its centenary, is republished with revisions in 2024 as a paperback and an ebook. The narratives and analyses developed here covered the "what, how, when and who" and the "why and so what" of the development of the Hong Kong Scout Movement from 1910 to 2010, using a large volume of primary sources. It tells the story of Hong Kong Scouting based the theme of citizenship training for youth and its defining categories, esp. that of race, class, gender, and age, both colonial and post'colonial. The book is also richly illustrated with interesting and instructive images, many of which came from the Hong Kong Scout Archives. The study, originally based on a Ph. D. dissertation, is not meant to be an institutional hagiography. Instead, it is a critical study aimed at both general readers and readers with more specific interests, and should enrich their understanding of the histories of Scouting, youth, citizenship education, the colonies, the British Empire, and decolonization, China and Hong Kong.

In this book, the renowned historian Orest Subtelny, who wrote Ukraine: A History, describes to us how, in 1911, a small group of teachers, whose people lived under foreign rule, at the crossroads of empires, took Baden Powell's idea, adapted it to their circumstances and formed a scouting organization for the betterment of Ukrainian youth and to provide hope to the Ukrainian nation. The organization was buffeted by history — repression, war, emigration, dispersement throughout the world — and finally found renewal in a free Ukraine. It was an amazing journey, truly a unique story.

Haunters of used book stores may have spotted the mystery and adventure books of Percy Keese Fitzhugh (1876-1950). They were phenomenally popular in the 1920s, and millions of copies were sold. Fitzhugh was an American author. His first known work, The Goldenrod Story Book, was published in 1906. The bulk of his work, having a Boy Scouting theme, revolves around the fictional town of Bridgeboro, New Jersey. Characters included Tom Slade, Pee-wee Harris, Roy Blakely, and Westy Martin. Fitzhugh's Scouting based books were very popular with children and adults. His characters became so real to his readers that it was not uncommon for Percy to receive fan mail addressed to the characters themselves. In the 1930s, attempting to branch out, he began writing the Hal Keen Mystery Series (10 titles) under the pseudonym Hugh Lloyd. They were followed by another mystery series, Skippy Dare, though this one only lasted for 3 books. Neither of these series achieved the popularity of his Scout work. This volume contains the first 7 Pee-Wee Harris books: Pee-wee Harris (1922) Pee-wee Harris on the Trail (1922) Pee-wee Harris in Camp (1922) Pee-wee Harris in Luck (1922) Pee-wee Harris Adrift (1922) Pee-wee Harris, F.O.B. Bridgeboro (1923) Pee-wee Harris, Fixer (1924) If you enjoy this volume of the MEGAPACK® series, check out the more than 400 other volumes, covering children's literature, science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance—and much, much more!
