If we're honest, most of us feel bored, distracted, or discouraged in prayer. We look for resources to give us the "right" words or teach us the "right" technique and are disappointed when they don't seem to help. What we fail to realize is that prayer isn't a place for us to be good or right, and it isn't a place for us to perform or prove our worth. It's a place for us to be honest, present, and known--a place for us to offer ourselves and receive God. Spiritual formation experts Kyle Strobel and John Coe want to show you what you've been missing when it comes to prayer. In this down-to-earth book, they show you how to fearlessly draw near to a holy God, pray without ceasing (and without posturing), and delight in the experience of being fully known and fully loved. Each chapter ends with prayer projects or practices to help you see a difference in your prayer life, starting now.

"Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. . . . And those who preach faith, and enable and elevate it are intellectual slaveholders, keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction." -- Bill Maher Many seem unaware that contemporary critiques of Christianity are relevant mostly to its modern offshoots (whose followers have to some extent earned Bill Maher's unflattering caricatures). To its detriment, Christianity is increasingly identified in people's minds with these more recent expressions. As a result, a growing number of people are turning away from Christianity and, indeed, religious faith altogether. Drawing from an eclectic group of theologians, clergy members, monastics, and lay scholars, this edited volume re-introduces Christianity to a modern audience. It presents a more authentic, experiential side of Christianity to the religious skeptic; a side that eschews blind faith, legalism, and judgment; a side that is rarely given a hearing in the ongoing debate with today's skeptics. Re-Introducing Christianity is also directed at modern Christians, and refutes their most frequently expressed criticisms of what the contributors boldly, but humbly, call the Apostolic Faith.

International Handbook Of Practical Theology written by Birgit Weyel and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-05 with Religion categories.

Practical theology has outgrown its traditional pastoral paradigm. The articles in this handbook recognize that religion, spirituality, lived religion on this side and beyond institutional communities refer to realms of cultures, ritual practices, and symbolic orders whose boundaries are not clearly defined and whose contents are shifting. The Handbook of Practical Theology offers insightful transcultural conceptions of religion and religious affairs collected from various cultures and religions. The first section presents ‘concepts of religion’. Chapters include considerations of the conceptualizing of religion in the fields of 'anthropology', 'community', 'family', 'institution', 'law', 'media', and 'politics' among others. The second section is dedicated to case studies of ‘religious practices’ from the perspective of their actors. The third section presents the main theoretical discourses that map the globally significant diversity and multiplicity of religion. Altogether, fifty-eight authors from different parts of the world encourage a rethinking of religious practice in an expanded, transcultural, globalized, and postcolonial world.

Chaucer S Prayers written by Megan E. Murton and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with History categories.

In a culture as steeped in communal, scripted acts of prayer as Chaucer's England, a written prayer asks not only to be read, but to be inhabited: its "I" marks a space that readers are invited to occupy. This book examines the implications of accepting that invitation when reading Chaucer's poetry. Both in his often-overlooked pious writings and in his ambitious, innovative pagan narratives, the "I" of prayer provides readers with a subject-position thatcan be at once devotional and literary - a stance before a deity and a stance in relation to a poem. Chaucer uses this uniquely open, participatory "I" to implicate readers in his poetry and to guide their work of reading. In examining Christian and pagan prayers alongside each other, Chaucer's Prayers cuts across an assumed division between the "religious" and "secular" writings within Chaucer's corpus. Rather, it emphasizes continuities andapproaches prayer as part of Chaucer's broader experimentation with literary voice. It also places Chaucer in his devotional context and foregrounds how pious practices intersect with and shape his poetic practices. These insightschallenge a received view of Chaucer as an essentially secular poet and shed new light on his poetry's relationship to religion.

Words With God written by Addison D. Bevere and has been published by Baker Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-18 with Religion categories.

For most of us, prayer is a struggle. Do our prayers even matter? What, if anything, happens when we pray? Are we having words with God or just words with ourselves? We know we should pray. It would be good for us--help us be more grounded, more connected to God. But in our hurried lives, slowing down to pray can feel like a cosmic waste of time. In this thoughtful book, bestselling author Addison Bevere takes you into and through the tension of prayer--the struggles, the doubts, the answers--to the place where God makes himself real to you. He tackles questions such as: · What do we do with unanswered prayers and how do we move through them? · Why does God invite us to ask through prayer if he is aware of every need? · Is there a right way to pray? If so, what is it? · How do we learn to hear the Voice of God? Tired of boring, empty, transactional prayer? This is the book for you. "Addison's book takes us through our desires for prayer, our disappointments in prayer, and the profound deeper plan of God for our prayers. This is the book you'll return to again and again."--Mark Batterson, New York Times bestselling author of The Circle Maker, lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington, D.C. "This beautifully written book is honest, intelligent, mysterious, and hope-filled. It's the kind of book about prayer that makes you want to pray."--Annie F. Downs, New York Times bestselling author of That Sounds Fun "Addison takes us beyond clichés and into the heart of God in a way that is biblical, personal, and deeply satisfying. This will stir fresh hunger for intimate conversations with God."--Jon Tyson, author of Beautiful Resistance, pastor of Church of the City New York www.church.nyc
