Theologians have not often mined 2 Corinthians for its theological gemstones, but careful reading uncovers significant doctrinal insights. It is not just an occasional letter that battles those inside and outside of the congregation who have belittled Paul for lacking power and glory. He writes as a pastor dousing the flames of dissension, disgruntlement, toxic leadership, and deviant theology. Therefore, what he says can be meaningful to ministers today who may face the same kinds of problems and seek to live a cruciform ministry. The letter has relevance for the church universal, and Paul's responses to the various issues are grounded in a well-developed theological substructure. The letter offers profound insights into the Trinity, atonement, reconciliation, being in Christ, cruciform ministry, and the hope of the resurrection.

This collection of nineteen representative essays is a Festschrift written by former colleagues and students in honor of Prof. Dr. Robert Jewett (1933–2020) and his legacy. Our hope is that future generations of Bible readers will find this textbook on biblical interpretation helpful for navigating through the strong winds of exegetical, theological, and hermeneutical methods. Jewett’s expansive research interests have inspired each author in this tribute volume, each of whom has witnessed to the ways that helmsman Jewett has navigated through the often-choppy ocean waters of biblical interpretation—as well as the complex, changing world of religion, sacred texts, films and popular culture, psychology and sociology, politics and Pauline studies.

A Synoptic Christology Of Lament written by Channing L. Crisler and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-04 with Religion categories.

In A Synoptic Christology of Lament: The Lord Who Answered and the Lord Who Cried, Channing Crisler explores an oft underappreciated description of Jesus in which the Synoptic writers portray him as both answering cries of distress and uttering them himself. Matthew, Mark, and Luke take up the quintessential language of suffering from Israel’s Scriptures, namely lament. Their engagement with lament overlaps and diverges from one another based upon their specific biographical aims. What emerges from this engagement is a diverse biographical portrait in which Jesus both responds to the cries of the afflicted as Israel’s God did and shares in their cries as righteous sufferers from Israel’s past did. The explanatory climax of this phenomenon arises in the respective passion narratives where Jesus’s ability to answer and utter lament finally converge in the same literary setting. The implications of this dynamic are far reaching as it provides yet another consideration for ongoing research on early Christology. The lament language embedded in the Synoptic Gospels and reflected in subsequent early Christian writings points to a belief among some Christ followers that Jesus answered their cries and participated in them.

This introduction to a biblical theology of the New Testament seeks to revitalize our engagement with the Scriptures for the twenty-first century by showing not only how the assemblage of ancient writings consisting of both Old and New Testaments is intrinsically relevant, but also how we can remain faithful to Jesus Christ, the organizing principle of those writings, in the process. The book is an invitation to all people of goodwill--believers and unbelievers, liberals and conservatives--to put aside their differences in order to cooperate in the revolution that Jesus inaugurated, the creation of a new and better world in the here and now as an anticipation of the eschatological finale. In an age in which many people are overwhelmed by life and looking for ways to cope, this book offers fresh perspectives and penetrating insights that are grounded in solid biblical scholarship with the aid of contemporary philosophical concepts.

Scripture is a beautiful mosaic of Christ. The earliest Christians expressed their faith with creativity through symbols and summaries. In Christ the Center, Tomas Bokedal explores the relationship of the rule of faith, nomina sacra, and numerical patterns with Scripture. The nomina sacra—scribal reverence for divine names within Scripture—display remarkable intentionality and theological reflection. The nomina sacra in turn directed the emerging rule of faith. These scribal practices reveal early devotional and theological preoccupation and guided the text's shape and interpretation in the early centuries after Christ. Christ the Center showcases early Christian reverence for Scripture—and especially for the One of whom Scripture speaks.

This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Barclay’s introduction to and concise commentary on Second Corinthians. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.
