Oltre a essere uno dei più grandi pittori di tutti i tempi, Van Gogh era infatti uno scrittore dal talento straordinario. Le centinaia di lettere scritte al fratello Theo, agli amici artisti – come Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac o Émile Bernard – compongono un sorprendente racconto della sua vita, e insieme rappresentano uno strumento indispensabile per penetrare il suo universo artistico. La lettura di queste pagine – una generosa selezione dall’immenso corpus del carteggio, che per il rigore e l’autorevolezza che la ispirano può ritenersi definitiva – mette profondamente in discussione l’immagine del genio capriccioso e irrequieto che siamo abituati a collegare alla figura dell’artista. Van Gogh non era un depresso e un ubriacone, capace poi istintivamente di trasferire sulla tela il mondo che lo circondava. Le sue lettere non sono un insieme di esternazioni irrazionali, prive di coerenza, ma la testimonianza di un genio, di un sottile pensatore, con una precisa visione del mondo, alla costante ricerca del senso dell’esistenza. Le lettere rappresentano per l’artista un vero e proprio laboratorio, di cui egli si serve per sviluppare idee sull’arte, sulla vita, sulla pittura e sulle sue tecniche, sulla letteratura – di cui era un appassionato frequentatore – e sulla condizione umana in genere. Van Gogh scrive incessantemente del suo essere in lotta, dei suoi scarsi successi, della disperazione e della malattia. La sua prosa è affascinante e capace di arrivare dritta al cuore, «nel più puro degli stili» come ha scritto Charles Bukowski. Nelle lettere, la parola scritta e l’immagine spesso si fondono, l’una dà forza all’altra. Van Gogh scriveva e disegnava, componendo schizzi e bozzetti che avrebbero poi dato vita ai suoi capolavori. Il volume contiene, infatti, 110 schizzi originali pubblicati contestualmente ai testi delle lettere. Lo struggente document humain rappresentato dal corpus di queste lettere di Van Gogh ha lo stesso fervore della sua arte, e sembra dirci con Van Gogh: «Voglio andare avanti a ogni costo – voglio essere me stesso».
