La scelta di lettere di donne, dal quattordicesimo secolo ad oggi, presentata in questo volume, ruota intorno ai concetti di "amore", "assenza" e "desiderio". Le analisi sviluppate mirano - attraverso approcci transdisciplinari - a mostrare l'importanza di questi testi che oscillano fra pragmatica e letterarietà e ad indagare i tratti specifici con cui l'epistolografia femminile in volgare "raffigura e conferisce una forma". Nella lettera d'amore, infatti, per dirla con Barthes, la donna conferisce una forma all'assenza dell'amato.
