L'epistolario fra Giorgio La Pira e Giovanni Battista Montini, pubblicato ora per la prima volta, copre un periodo di tempo che va dal 1930 al 1963 e rappresenta un importante tassello per la ricostruzione dei rapporti fra queste due eminenti personalità, nonché della storia della Chiesa della società italiana nel Novecento. La corrispondenza documenta un'amicizia, che è iniziata negli anni '20, tra lo studente universitario venuto dalla Sicilia e il giovane assistente della FUCI, e che continuerà nel tempo, pur nella differenza dei loro temperamenti: appassionato e ottimista La Pira, riflessivo e misurato Montini. Emergono con chiarezza, da questi scambi epistolari, un comune amore per la Chiesa, un'intensa spiritualità, una puntuale attenzione agli avvenimenti storici visti come lo snodarsi di un piano provvidenziale che occorre poco a poco decifrare. Affiora la grande passione di La Pira per Firenze, con il suo desiderio di superare la crisi industriale che colpì la città negli anni '50, e per il mondo intero, caratterizzata da forte tenacia nel perseguire ideali universali di pace e di civiltà cristiana. E Montini, interlocutore privilegiato, lo accompagna con spirito di discernimento e di sapiente, realistico incoraggiamento. "Si vede chiaro", scrive La Pira in una lettera del 9 giugno 1963, "la ragione profonda della vicinanza che il Signore ha stabilito da 40 anni fra di noi: cioè un fine ben definito: forse questo fine sarà totalmente chiarito quando Lei - se il Signore così ha disposto! - salirà sulla cattedra di Pietro per servire la Chiesa di Roma e la Chiesa di tutto il mondo". Di lì a pochi giorni, il 21 giugno, questa profezia si sarebbe avverata con l'elezione di Montini a pontefice.

Con l'ingresso dell'Italia nel primo conflitto mondiale i direttori dei periodici teramani affidarono al Corriere Abruzzese la pubblicazione di un Bollettino della Guerra, il cui primo numero uscì il 30 maggio 1915, con l'intento di «esaudire un voto non solo del Comitato per l'organizzazione Civile, ma della cittadinanza, desiderosa di essere tenuta sollecitamente informata dalle notizie di guerra». Inoltre il Corriere si fece promotore di un abbonamento eccezionale per i soldati, i quali potevano ricevere il periodico due volte la settimana; l'iniziativa ebbe grande successo e presto iniziarono ad essere pubblicate le numerosissime lettere che giungevano dal fronte, ed alle quali le pagine del periodico dedicò largo spazio (soprattutto nei primi due anni del conflitto) nella rubrica "Il saluto dei nostri soldati". Cicero has played a pivotal role in shaping Western culture. His public persona, his self-portrait as model of Roman prose, philosopher, and statesman, has exerted a durable and profound impact on the educational system and the formation of the ruling class over the centuries. Il convegno, dal titolo Kosmos nel XXI Secolo, dedicato alla celebrazione dei 250 anni dalla nascita di Alexander von Humboldt, si è proposto come una rivisitazione in chiave attuale dell'ultimo lavoro di Humboldt e suo testamento spirituale Kosmos – Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung. Partendo dalla immagine integrata e coerente del cosmo proposta da Humboldt, il convegno si è delineato come una vivace occasione di dibattito interdisciplinare su questioni di interesse globale e di grande attualità. Temi inerenti al fabbisogno energetico, alla biodiversità, ai viaggi, alla comunicazione, alle migrazioni, alla poesia, alla storia e alla geografia sono stati affrontati con interesse e spirito costruttivo tra discipline scientifiche e umanistiche nel suggestivo contesto di Villa Vigoni e del lago di Como. Il convegno, sostenuto dalla fondazione tedesca Alexander von Humboldt, è stato aperto e concluso dai rappresentanti istituzionali della Repubblica Federale di Germania ed ha avuto una ampia partecipazione nazionale ed internazionale. Jahrhundert widmete sich der 250 Jahr-Feier des Geburtstags Alexander von Humboldts und bot somit einen aktuellen Blick auf Humboldts letztes Werk und sein geistiges Erbe: Kosmos – Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung. Ausgehend von Humboldts Bild des Kosmos, bot die Konferenz eine lebendige Gelegenheit für eine interdisziplinäre Debatte über Fragen von globalem und aktuellem Interesse. Fragen der Energienachfrage, Biodiversität, Reisen, Kommunikation und Migration, Poesie und Geschichte sowie Geographie wurden behandelt und in einem interessanten und konstruktiven Vergleich zwischen den Disziplinen im wissenschaftlich und humanistisch Kontext von Villa Vigoni diskutiert. Die Konferenz, unterstützt von der Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, wurde von den institutionellen Vertretern der Bundesrepublik Deutschland eröffnet und hatte eine große nationale sowie internationale Beteiligung.
