Sculpting the Land, by award winning landscape architect Diana Armstrong Bell, is a homage to her unique interpretation of the possibilities of landscape design. A selection of her aesthetically compelling projects, many of which have won international design competitions, show the influence of her study of abstract art, particularly the work of Kazimir Malevich. Diana has developed her own individual approach to landscape design and here she reveals how these unique designs came to be imagined. Inspired by earthworks, lines and patterns in the landscape which over time can appear as land art, spending time in a landscape, observing, listening and gathering clues about its past and how they inform a new story, are all part of the process. All hand-drawn in pencil, ink, collage and watercolour, the book showcases a remarkable collection of art, which is used to develop and present design ideas.Diana focusses on large scale public landscapes in the urban realm, with many of the landscapes being created on 'brownfield' sites including Parco Franco Verga in Milan, Lac de Senart in France, Rochester Riverside Park and Electra Park in London.

This book traces the creation, from concept through installation, of a major new sculpture, Body Politic, by artist David Stromeyer. Stromeyer has made art on his land in northern Vermont for fifty years. His work is found in private, municipal, and museum collections in the U.S. and internationally. In 2014, David and his wife Sarah created Cold Hollow Sculpture Park, opening their property with seventy of his large, outdoor sculptures, to the public. Since then, the Park has become a nonprofit hosting thousands of visitors and a seasonal series of multidiscipline programs as well an annual Artist-in-Residence.This is also the story of Stromeyer as a young artist, coming to Vermont to realize his vision - the marriage of art and landscape - by establishing a life and a studio to ultimately fulfill his dream. He speaks of what urges him to be a maker. He describes and discusses his influences, processes, choice of materials, use of narrative, how he uses color, the interplay between art and science, and, finally, the importance of play in his art. Stromeyer says: "For forty-five years I thought of my sculptures as individual expressions. With the formation of Cold Hollow Sculpture Park, I realize that I have always been working on one big artwork, which is the Park." His words come alive in this full color, richly illustrated volume with over three hundred images of his art and art making on the land. The anticipated audience includes: art professionals, landscape architects and engineers, practicing artists, art professors and student, as well as the general public.

A frequently thrilling book that showcases the work of 35 internationally recognized environmental artists, all of whom share a goal to motivate people to understand humanity's relationship to the planet, and to correct the negative impact of technology on the environment. In his or her own words, each artist addresses the intentions and mechanics of their particular project. The works break through traditional barriers to create systems that are themselves a part of the Earth, using for example, natural forces in their structures--tidal flows, wind currents, and forest regeneration.
